ABOUT THE POSITION: The Director of Special Education Programming is a full-time, administrative position which supports school faculty and staff in providing outstanding instructional programs to D/HH students preschool – eighth grade. The Director of Special Education Programming plays a key role in successful implementation of our curriculum and instructional methodologies, while also furthering the unique mission and objectives of NWSDHH. This staff member reports to the Head of School.

ABOUT OUR SCHOOL: Located in the Seattle area, Northwest School for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children (NWSDHH) is a national leader in the education of deaf and hard-of-hearing (D/HH) students using simultaneous oral English and Signing Exact English (S.E.E.). Dedicated to successful research-based practices, the school provides a nurturing educational environment for children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, offering superior education while fostering spoken language and listening skills through the use of S.E.E.  Our educational programs include: birth-to-three, preschool – eighth grade and school district support.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Leadership & Management

  • Serves as a member of the school’s leadership team. Provides direct management, coaching, and support to a team of program staff; including TODs, Paraeducators, and Interpreters.

Preschool – 8th Grade Program Management

  • Serves as the primary administrative manager for preschool – 8th grade program. Oversees the selection and implementation of curricula, class schedules, assessments, reporting to parents/guardians and/or liaison between teachers and guardians, submission of reports to external agencies as required, and all aspects of the school’s academic program. Promotes collaboration within the school, with other schools, and with other institutions.
  • Working in collaboration with the Head of School, oversees development and implementation of programmatic policies/procedures. Provides select professional development training for all instructional staff aligned with the master instructional staff training and professional development plan developed and overseen by the Head of School. Manages programmatic orientation of new instructional staff and substitutes. Serves as a day-to-day consultant to instructional staff in matters of classroom management, teaching methods, and general school procedures. Attends meetings and supports instructional staff and families during IEP’s, Evaluations, Report Card conferences and other meetings as needed. Oversees the maintenance of a comprehensive set of records on students, staff and prospective students.
  • Administers the school’s behavior management policies and standards of conduct, creates/supports Behavior Improvement Plans with appropriate team members Plans the provision of effective staff training activities for staff in cooperation with the Head of School.
  • Monitors testing and reporting strategies, including annual assessments, IEPs and report cards. Recruits and plans teaching/interpreting experiences for student teachers and interpreters.  Working in partnership with the Head of School, completes formal and informal observation process of all instructional staff.

Admissions & Recruitment

  • Serves as first point of contact for families wanting to learn about our school. Organizes and leads tours for prospective families. Manages and collaborates in evaluation of prospective students. Supports planning and implementation of other tours (donors, community partners, and colleagues in Deaf Education).

Administrative Oversight and Coordination:

  • Creates daily schedule (including academics, mainstreaming, recess, lunch supervision, and bus duty), including arranging for substitute teachers. Coordinates routine school events (such as Service Above Self, Seattle Children’s Theatre, Burke Museum, 8th grade art, music and annual events such as Open House, Optimist Oratory Contest, Special Guest Day, and End of Year Program) and programs (such as the EIPA Success and Spanish Speaking Families Program). Serves as liaison with the NWSDHH Parents’ Club, coordinating efforts on behalf of the school and maintaining vigilance regarding liability concerns. Creates/Updates/Maintains Instructional Staff Handbook and Student Handbook (in collaboration with the Chief Operating Officer to cross reference Staff Employment Handbook).

JOB REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Knowledge & Skills:

  • Minimum three years of experience as a Special Education or DHH classroom teacher. Minimum two years of experience in a leadership role and managing a team of adults. Familiarity with the strategies and techniques used at NWSDHH or willingness to learn and implement. In-depth knowledge of local, state, and national special education laws and policies and how they relate to Non-Public agencies and contractual settings. Competency in current effective teaching strategies, curricula, technology, classroom management strategies and practices used in a Special Education setting. Knowledge-based competencies related to administrative and supervisory duties; curriculum and instructional leadership; effective conflict resolution skills; familiarity with current state and local trends in deaf education.

  • Passion for the NWSDHH mission and approach to education.
  • S.E.E. fluency preferred, ASL proficiency welcome, with demonstrated willingness for S.E.E. development ongoingly.
  • Excellent team-building skills.
  • Effective coach and collaborator: While maintaining high standards, can assist development of new skills and attitudes in employees who are not meeting job expectations.
  • Ability to effectively navigate difficult situations with parents, staff or other professionals.
  • Ability to develop long- and short-range plans and programs, managing timelines and deadlines for project completion.
  • Creative, analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to analyze issues and create action plans.
  • Organizational and time management skills; ability to adapt to changing work priorities, meet deadlines and schedules, set priorities and work as part of a team.

Education: Master’s degree in Education Leadership, Special Education Administration, Deaf Education, Special Education, or related area such as Speech & Hearing Science.

Certificates & Licenses:

  • Washington State Administrator’s Credential preferred Washington State Teaching Certification in Deaf Education or Special Education

Clearances: Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance and Hepatitis B immunization within 120 days of employment.

Working Environment: The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 40% sitting, 40% walking, and 20% standing. The job is performed in a generally hazard-free environment and in a clean atmosphere.

Salary: Range: $105,000-120,000 per year depending on experience, training and skills. Very generous paid time off, health/dental/vision benefits, retirement matching contribution, professional development and free parking.
