 The Organization:

Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon (EMO) brings together people of faith and goodwill from across the state. The largest ecumenical organization in the nation, EMO was created by a merger in 1974 of the Portland and Oregon Councils of Churches, which trace their roots to 1917.

Today EMO has 676 local faith communities, 109 financial faith community partners, and 15 member denominations. We serve tens of thousands of people in need and impact the lives of hundreds of thousands more through advocacy, community engagement, education, and interfaith dialogue.

We have a unique downstream (direct service) and upstream (advocacy and dialogue) approach. Downstream we operate seven programs that focus on houseless youth, refugee resettlement, individuals living with HIV/AIDS, immigration law, survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, and the food-insecure. Upstream, our Public Policy team brings together a diverse coalition to advocate at the state Legislature for an Oregon that works for everyone. Our Creation Justice program advocates for environmental concerns. And our Common Table connects interfaith leaders for dialogue and collaboration.
