Job Details

Nicholas House’s mission is to help families who are experiencing homelessness and support them through their crisis. We are seeking a Director of Development to lead our organization in building stronger relationships with our existing donors and helping form new relationships with partners who are interested in working with us to achieve our mission.

The ideal candidate believes that working together creates more effective and longer solutions for the families we serve. We believe we should “do with”. We work “with” the families in our program, trusting that they are capable of developing their future story; we work “with” community partners instead of competing against them. And we work “with” our donors to facilitate opportunities for them to help Nicholas House families make important and lasting changes in their lives. The ideal candidate will have a passion for engaging with donors and presenting opportunities for them to help Nicholas House families build a better future. At the same time, our ideal candidate is also a data wonk, who is just as comfortable crunching our revenue numbers, analyzing our results and using that analysis to create and implement strategies to improve our engagement with existing and potential donors.

Who We Are

Nicholas House’s mission is to help families who are experiencing homelessness and support them through their crisis. Nicholas House helps families who are struggling to pay rent move into affordable homes, get themselves to work and their children off to school, and ultimately lift themselves up and out of poverty and toward a better life.

What You’ll Do

The Director of Development, who reports to the Executive Director, is responsible for the following:

  • Building and maintaining strategic relationships with Nicholas House donors and identifying potential new donors to introduce to the organization. Creating and overseeing a pipeline calendar for foundation, corporate and government grants the organization should apply for. Ensures these deadlines (including all reports) are met. Works with two contract grant writers, one focused on foundation and corporate grants and one focused on government grants on narratives and reports.
  • Maintaining a personal portfolio of major gift prospects (defined as those giving a gift of $1,000+ in support of Nicholas House). Communicate with portfolio through cultivation, solicitation and stewardship meetings. Ensure that each major donor and prospect has a clear written strategy and timeline for cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Building our Faith Based Partner program by creating and overseeing solicitation and stewardship of current faith-based donors and working with the Volunteer and Marketing Manager to identify prospective Faith Based Partners.
  • Support the fundraising efforts of the Executive Director in securing new and renewed gifts.
  • Supervises the Development Administrative Assistant to ensure proper donor recognition and the implementation of a CRM process that provides quality donor data and efficient processes for recognition and stewardship of donors.
  • Works with the Volunteer and Marketing Manager on donor communications and strategies to engage donors in meaningful volunteer opportunities and inviting volunteers to become donors.
  • Serving as a member of the organization’s leadership team

Who You Are & Keys to Success (the must-haves)

To be successful in this job, you will excel in four areas:

Relationship-building: You develop and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with a diverse group of donors to the organization, the Nicholas House Board of Directors, and Nicholas House staff.

Drive to achieve results: You have a track record of accomplishing ambitious goals and getting results even when there are obstacles. You set a high bar and meet it, because you think three (or 30) steps ahead to anticipate hurdles and come up with pragmatic solutions. You plan backwards and involve others appropriately.

Inclusive leadership and management: You approach leadership with a mindset of “power with” rather than “power over” and regularly include others in decision-making. You have experience managing multiple projects and keeping tasks from slipping through the cracks. You use resources wisely, and can manage a team of staff, consultants, and volunteers to leverage time and talent for impact.

Flexibility: You are ready to take advantage of unexpected opportunities; you are able to adapt quickly as things change.

Knowledge of affordable housing issues and the challenges facing the families we serve is a plus, but not a requirement.

lf You Were Here Right Now, You Would Be:

  • Putting together a development plan, using prior year metrics, for our next fiscal year, starting September 1.
  • Setting up meetings with major donors to introduce the new Executive Director
  • Evaluating CRM databases and working with the Administrative Assistant and a Consultant to migrate and improve our data.
  • Meeting with two to three donors a week to present opportunities for them to help Nicholas House families build a better future.
  • Working with our grant writers to ensure that quality proposals are submitted on time.

What Else You Should Know

  • The position is full-time. The Director of Development position is a hybrid position, with the ability to work from home. The salary for this position ranges from $75K to $85K, with exact salary depending on experience. We also offer excellent benefits such as health insurance where a percentage of the benefit is paid by Nicholas House and 50% match to a 403b on all contributed funds up to 6% of annual earnings with NHI. Other benefits include a cell phone stipend, paid vacation, holidays and personal days.
  • This role is ideal for someone who is excited to partner with an Executive Director who has previously been a Director of Development and is excited to work closely with our next Director of Development to bring new and innovative ideas to the table.
