Job Details

General description:  The Communications Manager is part of Columbia’s Advancement team within the Marketing Communication department. The position supports Columbia’s seminary-wide digital efforts (website, social media and CRM) to ensure coordinated and consistent marketing and communications efforts and messaging. The position supports the Offices of Enrollment and Student Affairs (ESA) and Academic Affairs (AA) to meet the goals and objectives of Columbia with respect to student recruitment, admissions, financial aid, enrollment, retention, and placement. This position reports to the Director, Marketing Communication.

Essential functions: 

  • In coordination with ESA, AA, and the Admissions Committee, regularly identify and pursue internal and external communications opportunities and develop and implement appropriate tactics to optimize Columbia’s engagement with current and prospective students.
  • Contribute to the overall marketing communications plan for Columbia, help develop and maintain a plan and editorial calendar for the general and constituency-specific seminary and ESA social media and CRM channels, scheduling and implementing digital communications.
  • Assist with development and implementation of an integrated strategic communications plan that advances the goals and objectives of recruitment, admissions, financial aid, enrollment, retention and placement.
  • Assist with conceptualization and optimization of current and future digital content, platforms, and channels to achieve maximum engagement with all of Columbia’s stakeholders.
  • Ensure coordination and integration between ESA priorities and Columbia-wide marketing and communications efforts.
  • Write and revise website content to ensure that it is appropriately organized, optimized, and regularly updated to create a clear, effective, and engaging online experience for website visitors and target audiences.
  • Manage the Admissions microsite, keeping it up to date and developing fresh content as appropriate.
  • Collect and analyze data from the website, social media and CRM platforms to help the Marketing Communications team to plan and make refinements and improvements over time.
  • Monitor digital channels and help engage stakeholders on our social media platforms.
  • Advance and support Columbia’s storytelling with particular regard to student and alumni stories, attentive to the needs and interests of stakeholder audiences.
  • Create and administer surveys of student and alumni experiences.
  • Identify, create and procure collateral materials to support ESA strategies and initiatives.
  • Write communications messages and copy for print and digital application.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Five years of related experience and a record of successful job performance preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of communications principles, emerging marketing/technological trends
  • Experience in digital strategic marketing
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience using and supporting CRM systems; experience preferred with Slate and Raisers Edge
  • Experience using website content management systems
  • Experience monitoring and using data to help improve marketing and communications efforts
  • Strong attention to detail and self-motivation
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative, complex environment
  • Excellent organizational skills and project management
  • Cultural competency
  • Mission-driven; Comfort working in religious environments
  • Experience working as an account or client manager preferred

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Although physical limitations for this position can be accommodated, the job’s physical demands can include but are not limited to intermittent sitting, standing, stooping, crouching, walking and some light lifting. Work is performed chiefly in an office environment. Some work on nights and weekends.
