JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Supervises and schedules crews and work calls during set/properties construction, load-ins, rehearsals, performances, and strikes for Theater Emory.
  • Serves as the shop lead, repairing and maintaining theater spaces, support areas, equipment, and inventory.
  • Responsible for the execution of daily tasks for the upkeep of Theater Emory facilities.
  • Supports the Technical Director (TD) in mentoring student groups, and supervises Theater Emory's technical support of student theater in terms of specific questions, requests for assistance, and borrowing of equipment; follows up with student groups during the TD's busiest time frames.
  • Oversees set construction and materials budget lines for productions and shop supplies.
  • Locates and purchases incidental items as dictated by the needs of productions.
  • Collaborate with the TD on ensuring the safety of students, staff, and performers.
  • Coordinates with the TD on the organization, staffing, and supervision of the Theater Emory production schedule, in conjunction and agreement with the Theater Studies academic schedule.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises professional theater technicians and work-study students during work calls and technical rehearsals.
  • Assists the TD in teaching components of the Stagecraft course.
  • Represent the TD in his/her absence, in emergency situations, and whenever the TD is unable to be on-call for performances.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

  • Build sets and execute various carpentry and welding projects.
  • Act as scene shop supervisor.
  • Oversee student and professional overhire crews in scenery construction.
  • Tool and equipment maintenance.
  • Non-departmental activities, such as performances by Dance and other University departments.
  • Occasional building maintenance (in conjunction with Production Manager).
  • Work in a laboratory setting and recognize the differing needs of theater personnel and individuals hired by the theater for various projects.
  • Ability to drive pickup truck and box truck.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor's degree and three years of related experience in theatrical productions, including knowledge of equipment, set plans/drawings, and set construction, OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possesses expert knowledge of theatrical equipment and its repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to read, understand, and draft theatrical ground plans, construction drawings, and schedules.
  • Demonstrate skills in theatrical carpentry, MIG Welding, theatrical rigging, and pneumatics.
  • Possesses the skills necessary for the execution of set and property construction.
  • Excellent inter-personal skills.
  • Interest and experience in the coordination of theater projects in non-traditional spaces and environments, for both Theater Emory and student groups.
  • Proficiency in computer technology: Email, MS Office (Word, Excel), and online file sharing.
  • Experience creating and maintaining inventory documents.
  • Autocad/Vectorworks experience.
  • Submit portfolio samples of work.

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
