Community Services Advocate

Ahimsa House, Georgia’s only nonprofit organization focused on addressing the connections between domestic violence and animal abuse, announces an open position starting in June 2022 for a Community Services Advocate. Must have prior domestic violence service experience. This is a full-time, exempt, direct services delivery position based in our Tucker, GA office with some travel within the state. This position requires some evening and weekend hours.  The Community Services Advocate will report directly to the Marketing and Communications Coordinator and will be responsible for sharing duties in the following:

  • Coordinate all community outreach efforts, including festivals, events, and outreach to professional agencies, such as law enforcement and animal welfare agencies.
  • Represent Ahimsa House at community outreach events as needed
  • Provide staff backup for community outreach volunteers on a rotating basis.  
  • Proactively research appropriate events and apply for attendance.
  • Manage outreach supply inventory, including displays, tables, materials, merchandise, etc. Develop and revise materials and handouts.
  • Create and maintain an outreach calendar.
  • Manage databases and tracking systems for community outreach.
  • Create and manage a database of all agency program partnerships statewide, including identification of needed partnerships in underserved areas.
  • Contact appropriate agencies and groups to schedule speaking engagements.
  • Represent Ahimsa House at speaking engagements.
  • Write outreach reports upon Executive Director’s request or for funding sources, newsletters, etc.
  • Represent Ahimsa House at Family Violence Task Force Meetings.
  • Recruit, train and supervise outreach volunteers and interns.
  • Process incoming outreach volunteers and maintain volunteer database.
  • Develop questionnaires to assess professionals’ knowledge of providing competent services to victims with pets, pre, and post-training.
  • Provide victims of domestic violence, professionals, and community members with in-person information and referrals.
  • Complete VAT Online Training and ongoing trainings related to victim advocacy and professional development.
  • Attend trainings related to domestic violence and professional development.
  • Coordinate volunteers at annual PGA, Pride, and other fundraising events.
  • Attend and work at annual Ahimsa House fundraising events.

The Community Services Advocate may also:

  • Provide professional training to domestic violence workers, law enforcement, animal control agencies, etc.

Salary is $35,568 with a benefits package.  Flexible work environment in a small organization doing big things.

Our ideal applicant is an animal lover, comfortable with cats, dogs of all sizes and breeds, and other pets; familiar with the link between domestic violence and animal abuse; holds a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Sociology, Psychology, Social Services, or related field; is flexible, able to put in nights and weekends as required and able to adapt to the unpredictable environment of a 24-hour emergency services program; has a valid driver’s license and safe driving skills; is able to lift 50lbs; is effective in written and oral communication, and is proficient in Microsoft Office. Experience with answering crisis lines and/or case management is a plus.
