Position Overview

The ACLU of GA is seeking a Communications Strategist to play a critical role in developing and executing communications strategies that advance the ACLU of Georgia’s work on civil liberties and civil rights. The strategist will engage target audiences about ACLU litigation and advocacy; help secure news coverage about ACLU of Georgia’s efforts; create content for publications and the website. The successful candidate will be able to problem-solve, multi-task, and respond swiftly to emerging civil liberties issues. They will be able to work independently as well with others as a part of a collaborative team environment, and will have a demonstrated commitment to racial equity, diversity and belonging.  

Core Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Communications Director to develop and lead key communications strategies and campaigns to advance key policy, legal, and development goals.
  • Draft reports, articles, and other materials that advocate for ACLU-GA policy, development, and legal priorities throughout the state;
  • Draft and edit public-facing persuasive content such as action alerts, social media posts, emails, blogs, newsletters, press releases and other materials; 
  • Actively monitor the news and social media channels to identify emerging stories and rapid response moments;
  • Identify needs for digital content and written materials, and work with the digital team, and program staff to have them produced in line with agreed strategies;
  • Engage in rapid response tactics, leveraging digital advocacy tools.
  • Under supervision of the Communications Director, develop media strategies, talking points and press releases, and pitch and facilitate media coverage for designated legal and policy initiatives; 
  • Create, edit, and publish live digital content such as videos and social media in response to breaking and pertinent events;
  • May supervise interns and volunteers;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications include:

  • 3-5 years of experience and demonstrated success in communications or related field;
  • Excellent oral and written communication, and presentation skills;
  • Experience with developing and implementing digital campaigns to achieve advocacy goals;
  • Familiarity and comfortability with a range of digital tools and platforms;
  • Ability to quickly learn new communications tools;
  • A creative and strategic thinker;
  • Organized with proven ability to meet tight deadlines, handle multiple ongoing projects, and manage resources effectively;
  • Ability to work independently and organized in a fast-paced environment, while managing several projects simultaneously and adjusting to frequently shifting and immediate demands;
  • Strong, demonstrated commitment to the mission and principles of the ACLU and social justice;
  • A commitment to diversity; a personal approach that values the individual and respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, ability and socio-economic circumstance;
  • Willingness to work occasional overtime or irregular hours, including some weekends;
  • Must have a current driver’s license and be willing to travel within the state.

Preferred

  • Experience producing and editing professional quality videos;
  • Media relations experience;
  • Bilingual, Spanish-English, a plus;
  • Graphic design skills and experience with Adobe Creative Suite a plus;
  • Experience working with or in a nonprofit; 
  • Knowledge of Georgia political and media landscape;
  • Experience with CMS, project management and social media scheduling tools a plus;
  • Degree in Communications, Journalism or related field.
