Abode Services' mission is to end homelessness by assisting low-income, un-housed people, including those with special needs, to secure stable, supportive housing; and to be advocates for the removal of the causes of homelessness.

Abode was founded in Alameda County in 1989, when a small group of people came together to address the growing problem of homelessness in the Tri-City Area. Today, the agency develops and implements innovative programs to end homelessness for more than 10,500 people each year in Alameda, Santa Clara, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, San Mateo, and Napa counties.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller will be responsible for oversight of all accounting, activities. This position supports the CFO in working closely with the Senior Executive Team, Human Resources (HR), and Information Technology (IT) staff to enhance and better integrate Finance, HR, and IT functions.

The Controller will lead all day-to-day accounting operations and supervise a team of 20+ employees, including functional responsibility over general accounting, accounts payable, and accounts receivable. They will ensure that Abode has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits. The Controller will work closely with Program Directors and their staff, not only to educate them regarding accounting procedures, but also to explore how the accounting function can support program operations.

Duties and Responsibilities

Accounting and Reporting Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program expenditures
  • Coordinate all audit activity
  • Consistently analyze accounting data and present accounting reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Oversee all financial, project/program, and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants
  • Manage organizational cash flow by working in partnership with the Program Directors. continuously collaborate with Program Directors to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations
  • Ensure periodic bank reconciliations are completed

Supervision and Leadership Responsibilities

  • Leverage strengths of the current Finance employees, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals
  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization, create and promote a positive and supportive work environment

Administrative Duties

  • Assists with special projects as requested
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Minimum B.A—CPA and/or MBA preferred
  • Five years’ experience in a large not for profit company, $70M or larger
  • Experience with single payer audits
  • 7-10 years of accounting and finance experience, ideally beginning in accounting and audit, followed by experience gathering, evaluating, presenting, and reporting financial information to executive teams and external stakeholders
  • Experience in a complex nonprofit that has multiple programs—need experience with multiple companies under parent and with intercompany accounting and consolidated financial statements
  • Experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development, and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments
  • Commitment to recruiting, mentoring, training, and retaining a diverse team; the foresight and ability to delegate according
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to the Senior Management Team, Board of Directors, or other outside partners
  • Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers
  • Meets all state required conditions of employment

  • Communicates clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Must be able to comprehend, follow, and clearly convey instructions to others
  • Must be computer proficient and be able to work on a computer for up to 40 hours per week
