Job Title: Organizing Manager, Global East (Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceana and the Middle East)

Location: New York, NY (preferred)

Position Type: Hybrid (currently 2 days in the office, up to 3 days working from home)

Department overview: As the main points of contact for Waterkeeper groups, both with information flowing out from Waterkeeper Alliance to Waterkeeper groups and vice versa, the Organizing Department is responsible for primary liaising between the Waterkeeper movement and Waterkeeper Alliance. The department is responsible for seeing the big picture and context of the organization’s work and coordinating that vision across the movement, addressing issues and questions raised by Waterkeeper groups, and providing/sharing information to the relevant departments within Waterkeeper Alliance.

 

Position Summary: The Organizing Manager, Global East is responsible for meeting the organization’s and department’s strategic plan goals and executing the department’s annual work plan.The Organizing Manager oversees the respective Organizers responsible for Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceana and the Middle East. While the Organizing Manager will, as a practical matter, work primarily from our New York City office, they will be expected to provide support and assistance to all of the Waterkeeper groups in these regions. The Organizing Manager must proactively engage with, and be accessible to their direct report(s), and all of the Waterkeeper groups in their respective regions, with some travel required.  This position reports directly to the Organizing Director.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Supervise Senior Organizers and Organizers in Global East regions; and provide direct organizing support to regions that aren’t large enough to justify regional organizer dedication at this time (Africa, Europe, Oceana and the Middle East);
  • Elevate the work of Waterkeeper groups in the respective regions and globally
  • Host and facilitate collaborative meetings of regional Waterkeeper groups; 
  • Alert Waterkeeper groups to outreach, training, fundraising or legislative opportunities as they arise; 
  • Provide liaison assistance, as needed, to help Waterkeeper groups gain access to opinion leaders and decision makers; 
  • With the Training Dept, oversee the planning of Regional Summits in Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceana and the Middle East. Including agenda creation, some event logistics and on-site support and facilitation;
  • Help coordinate Rapid Response efforts to assist Waterkeeper groups in time of crisis in their watersheds;
  • Help Waterkeeper groups in the respective regions make partnerships with allies, coalitions, working groups, etc; 
  • Help to solve problems and to launch projects with Waterkeeper groups both individually and collectively in the respective regions; 
  • Work with the Development Department to identify fundraising opportunities and conduct fundraising activities to support work in the respective regions;
  • Equitably assist individual Waterkeeper groups when practical to strengthen their ability to effect change;
  • Engage in regular communication with other Waterkeeper Alliance Organizers to share best practices and ensure consistent service; 
  • Execute a work plan with metrics;  
  • Engage in other duties assigned.


 

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least 5-years’ professional experience with a nonprofit/charitable organization, preferably with project management experience and employee management experience;
  • A Bachelor's degree, or equivalent work experience;
  • Ability to supervise direct reports;
  • Ability to take initiative, and work independently and efficiently to complete tasks;
  • Ability to prioritize work and the flexibility to change directions as the job dictates;
  • Ability to solve problems, work under pressure and maintain quality of detailed work while meeting deadlines;
  • Experience working in complex environments with a high degree of organizational effectiveness and attention to detail;
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral;
  • Proficiency in French, Chinese, and/or Mandarin, while not required, is preferred;
  • Ability for occasional travel (potentially quarterly) and weekend work;
  • Passion for Waterkeeper Alliance’s mission;
  • A positive attitude and a sense of humor.

Job type: Full time

Starting salary range: $70,000-$75,000
