Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of immigrant and working-class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy   innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York operates community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson  Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; Brentwood, Long Island and White Plains, Westchester County. With a membership of 24,000, MRNY  tackles the critical issues facing our communities, including workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant rights and civil rights, TGNCIQ justice, public  education, health care access, and immigration reform. (TGNCIQ = transgender, gender non-conforming, intersex and queer) ). Make the Road New  York is in a bargain agreement with National Organization of Legal Services Workers (NOLSW). 

MRNY is a multi-service organization. Our member-led organizing committees -- which work on the issues named above -- implement strategies to   combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. We also provide an array of high-quality bilingual services: We  offer English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Spanish-language literacy, computer literacy, citizenship preparation, and in-school and after school youth programs. We have a robust legal program that offers direct representation across a spectrum of practice areas, including employment law,   immigration law, housing and benefits, and TGNCIQ civil rights; we also take on impact litigation as a strategy for achieving broad change. Our health  program offers facilitated enrollment into health insurance programs and SNAP benefits, a community health worker home visit program, nutrition   education and emergency food pantries, health care navigation, and more." 

The Development and Communications Department is a 13-person team that supports all of the organization’s work with fundraising from individuals, private foundations and government sources. Our vast communications reach includes media outreach, social media, digital and hard copy materials and video to elevate our members’ voices and build public support. . 

Current Opening:

The Major Gifts Associate (MGA) will support MRNY’s individual donors team, particularly the Major Gifts Officer, who manages a portfolio of donors who annually give $5,000 and more. The MGA will support and track donor stewardship and cultivation efforts, provide administrative support and maintain donor records, conduct prospect research, and draft donor communications as well as brief proposals and reports for major donors. This role is a great opportunity to be involved in nearly every facet of individual donor development work and support a growing segment of MRNY’s fundraising. The MGA will report to the Major Gifts Officer and will work closely with the Development Director, senior staff, and other members of the development team.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Donor Stewardship & Cultivation:

  • Assist with soliciting, scheduling, and preparing for donor meetings
  • Support program staff in mid-level donor meetings
  • Draft email templates and communications; prep personalized emails for senior staff
  • Anchor mid-level and major donor mailings – personalized appeals, welcome packages and thank you’s, gifts, etc.; support other donor mailings as needed
  • Track and ensure quarterly and annual cultivation strategies
  • Track committed, pledged, and prospective major gifts and timing of gifts

Donor Records & Database Maintenance: 

  • Maintain accurate and updated mid-level and major donor records in Salesforce
  • Track donor outreach tasks and schedule as well as proposal/reporting deadlines
  •  File all donor communications and paperwork – meeting/call notes, gift acknowledgements, emails, cards, proposals, reports, etc. in Salesforce
  •  Support the creation and maintenance of Salesforce reports to track progress towards fundraising goals and needed information for donor strategies

Prospect Research:

  •  Conduct research on top prospects – new, existing, and prospective major donors  
  •  Coordinate findings from Development Assistant/team, flagging individuals with capacity
  •  Maintain updated donor profiles and personal information in Salesforce

Event Support:

  • Support major donor participation at the Gala and other events by facilitating major donor invitation and recognition
  • Prepare senior staff to engage with donors and assist with follow-up afterwards
  • Provide overall event support and logistical assistance as needed  

Donor Grant & Reporting Support: 

  • Track proposals and reports for major donors in Major Gifts Calendar
  • Coordinate needed financial reports with Grants/Finance teams
  • Draft proposals and reports as needed 

Requirements: 

  • Eligible to work in the U.S 
  • Required to be fully vaccinated with an FDA approved COVID-19 vaccine prior to first day of employment.
  • 2-3+ years of relevant fundraising experience for a nonprofit
  • Possess a commitment to collective action and community organizing
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus
  • Have experience working in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic work environment 

Job Competencies:

  • High level of accountability, initiative, and empathy
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and writing skills in short (email) and long (reports and proposals) formats
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to represent the organization with donors as well as interface with all levels of staff while maintaining flexibility and tact
  • Ability to prioritize and complete assignments under deadline with minimal supervision
  • Flexibility to adjust work plan to meet rapidly changing needs
  • Proficient in Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, and fundraising databases, preferably Salesforce
  • Interest in learning and devising new systems to help strengthen department processes 

Salary and Benefits:

Starting salary is based on a scale set by a democratically-elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education.   MRNY offers an excellent benefit package including health insurance, 401K, and generous paid vacation, sick, personal days. The salary range for this  position is from $51,859 to $61,859
