Job Details

 

This is an attorney position to provide civil legal representation and Hotline Assistance in family law cases, particularly to survivors of family violence. The attorney will assist survivors including victims of domestic violence, stalking, teen dating violence, sexual assault, and abuse in civil legal cases.

The Staff Attorney will:

1. Provide counsel and advice to family violence survivors on the array of legal options available, including protective orders, divorce, custody, visitation, child support, paternity-defense, legitimation, name changes, etc.

2. Provide civil legal representation to victim of crime, handling cases potentially in state, federal, and administrative forums;

3. Refer clients as needed for immigration assistance, including T-Visas, U- Visas, and VAWA applications to partners, GAIN (Georgian Asylum and Immigration Network) or others;

4. Refer clients as needed for other holistic services available, including safety planning, shelter, law enforcement assistance, victim assistance, counseling, benefits, and any other community services to assist in safety and economic security.

5. Maintain records and data on GLSP's case management system and for the VLAN for research, development, and project activity purposes;

6. Help to recruit and support pro bono attorneys to assist survivors with their legal needs;

7. Assist to create, catalog, and publish in a variety of formats a directory of existing holistic resource programs for survivors;

8 Facilitate presentations to bar associations and groups of attorneys promoting development of and participation in holistic civil pro bono program for survivors;

9. Attend statewide and national meetings and conferences as budgetary and grant requirements support;

10. Support applications of technology to the delivery of pro bono legal services; participating in discussions and proposing policy recommendations on the use of technology to develop and expand access to civil legal services for survivors.

11. Provide other legal services as appropriate and as determined by the Project Director.

 

Requirements

 

  •   Graduate of an accredited law school and current member of Georgia Bar with experience working with persons with low incomes and a commitment to social justice.
  • Willingness and ability to work as part of a team in a professional and collaborative manner.
  • Computer literacy, which includes familiarity using email, Excel, Word, SharePoint, LegalServer, and other computer programs.
  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid Georgia driver's license.
  • Ability to speak Spanish is highly valued.
  • Demonstrated interest or experience working with low-income clients on poverty law issues and commitment to social justice;
  • Ability to work with diverse populations, backgrounds and perspectives;
  • Excellent oral advocacy, research, and writing skills;
  • Attention to detail and self-motivated;
  • Ability to be creative and a team player.

Salary Requirements:

The starting salary is $50,750, depending upon experience and qualifications; GLSP offers excellent fringe benefits including an employer-financed partial loan repayment program. GLSP requires that all employees comply with our COVID – 19 Vaccine Policy.
