Summary: 

 

 

 

The Deputy Director, Development will support the execution of We Mean Business Coalition’s fundraising strategy for 2023-2030, which includes new WMB Initiatives and programmatic partnerships with top global organizations. This position is a new position in the WMB Secretariat to help accelerate fundraising initiatives, while developing an organization wide donor-focused relationship management strategy, versus a siloed approach by program or initiative.  

 

 

 

 

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:               

 

Lead execution of fundraising strategy with support from the Director of Strategic Partnerships and CEO. 

 

Develop (with support from the Secretariat) accompanying materials for fundraising including cases for support, qualified prospect lists, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies.  

 

Use knowledge of climate funding landscape to find synergies with current and new funder portfolios and our 2023-2030 strategy.  

 

Coordinate proposals for funders across the Secretariat, including for incubated projects such as the SME Climate Hub, managing upwards effectively.  

 

Develop performance targets for fundraising, tracking progress, pursuing corrective actions and reporting to the WMBC Board as required.    

 

Initiate, facilitate, and manage productive and high-value relationships ($1M+) between WMB Secretariat and key funders at the appropriate levels within each organization. Develop donor relationship management processes to be institutionalised via Salesforce as CRM.  

 

Represent WMBC in funder meetings and groups to enhance WMBC’s profile as a strategic fund and re-grantor.  

 

Be a successful fundraiser for gifts of $1M and higher, while also supporting the leadership team in making solicitations.  

 

Work to develop an engagement strategy with Communications and Programme teams for donors and prospects.   

 

Work with finance and HR to ensure agreements protect interests of We Mean Business and funders.  

 

 

 

MAIN OBJECTIVES: 

 

1. Executing our long-term fund strategy (pending Board approval), with the aim of:  

 

Converting existing donors into the fund  

 

Working with prospecting partners, family offices, match making entities and other prospecting partners to identify and secure at least 20 large gifts ranging from $1m-50m in the run up to public launch at Climate Week or a similar large-scale climate event 

 

Strengthening relationships with partner development leads to ensure non-competition of funder pool  

 

 

 

2. Donor stewardship and relationship building  

 

Developing strong donor relations practices across the Secretariat  

 

Increasing Secretariat relationship management practices and internal development processes  

 

Launching an internal CRM via Salesforce and accompanying staff support  

 

 

 

3. Short-term fundraising and proposal development  

 

Coordinating multiple Secretariat proposals to donors, including providing support the SME Climate Hub  

 

Managing up  

 

Finding ways to integrate WMB strategy into donor portfolios  

 

 

 

MAIN SKILLS REQUIRED: 

 

Demonstrated ability to envision, develop and lead emerging opportunities.  

 

Strong communicator  

 

Able to navigate and understand a complicated funding environment with the flexibility to change course quickly with a positive attitude  

 

Highly collaborative and fun team player.  

 

Familiarity with and a passion for addressing the intersections of business and social and environmental issues, including comfort working with corporates  

 

The ability to create impact through influence.  

 

Willingness to plunge into unfamiliar disciplines.  

 

 

 

EDUCATION: 

 

Masters degree in relevant field  

 

 

 

EXPERIENCE: 

 

 

 

10+ years experience in fundraising  

 

Experience working in climate strongly desired 

 

Knowledge of funders, NGOs, government entities and other organizations working in climate and environment globally.  

 

Proven fundraising  experience raising $5M+ annually, including experience managing bespoke funding opportunities and securing multiple gifts of $1M+ from Corporate philanthropy, Foundations or HNWI
