POSITION SUMMARY:

The Atlanta Speech School is seeking a school nurse for its afterschool and extended day programs.  This is a part-time position (20 hours per week) (Monday – Friday; 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.) The school nurse is in charge of all health and safety issues in the school related to students and staff.  This person is responsible for planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating school health services.  The school nurse serves in the roles of direct care provider, collaborator/advocate, educator, and health counselor for the entire school.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES OF THE POSITION:

  • Provide health care consultation and direct care for Speech School students and staff
  • Administer medication to students with written permission from parents; maintain log and accurate records of treatments and medication dispensed
  • Maintain contact with parents regarding student medical information, referrals and reports
  • Coordinate and participate in the establishment, review, and implementation of school health services, policies and procedures
  • Document, compile, and analyze data for reports on school health services
  • Participate in the development of the School’s emergency health and crisis plan and establish and implement protocol for emergency medical treatment
  • Implement communicable disease control in the school, including monitoring, surveillance, and disease Prevention
  • Track and follow up on immunization records to assure compliance with state health department requirements
  • Serve as liaison between the school and local health service agencies/providers and community resources
  • Coordinate the establishment of guidelines, procedures, equipment maintenance and training in First Aid/CPR and AED programs for staff
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • B.S. degree in nursing and current Georgia registered nurse license
  • Current CPR/first aid certificate and first aid instructor certificate
  • Minimum of two years experience working with children, preferably in a school setting
  • Ability to adapt to rapid transitions between varied tasks
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and organization skills
