Job Overview

Council for a Strong America (CSA) a national nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C. with offices in nine states.  CSA seeks an Associate Director of Mobilization who has the vision, relationships, and expertise to build the impact of our organization on children’s policy. The Associate Director of Mobilization will be a mid-level, well-networked, and experienced leader of public policy advocacy projects. This role will be responsible for all aspects of building our membership networks in an assigned portfolio of states and mobilizing our bipartisan law enforcement, retired military, and business leader membership organizations in support of a state and federal policy agenda that ensures children have the opportunity to succeed starting from birth.  

The Associate Director of Mobilization will have experience with education and/or children’s health policy, as well as demonstrate ability to remotely develop a deep understanding of the political landscape of their assigned states.

The Associate Director of Mobilization must also possess the diplomatic and interpersonal skills necessary to work with a wide variety of stakeholders, including our members, policymakers, partner organizations, funders, and other teams across the organization. Passion for policy advocacy, entrepreneurial instincts, and the determination of an organizer are character traits that are essential for success in this role. 

Responsibilities and Duties The Associate Director of Mobilization will:

  • Recruit, mobilize and track law enforcement, retired military, and business leaders.
  • Develops a state policy agenda and strategic advocacy plan to support it. 
  • Identifies policy opportunities in coordination with state and local allies and coalitions.
  • Creates and drives advocacy campaigns that include direct outreach to policymakers.
  • Cultivates relationships with policymakers, members, funders, allies, and media.
  • Works closely with national teams, as well as with other staff across the country.

Qualifications

  • Five or more years of progressively responsible legislative staffing and/or policy advocacy and/or election campaign experience is required.
  • Existing networks with policymakers, leaders of partner organizations, and/or funders.
  • Knowledge of early childhood and/or K-16 education and/or children’s health policy landscape.
  • Strong understanding of the state legislative process and advocacy strategies.
  • Strong commitment to our mission and strategic vision; appreciation for the advocacy value of unexpected messengers from the business, military, and law enforcement sectors.
  • Superior diplomatic skills and ability to work effectively with complex relationships; ability to persuade others to join a cause and take action.
  • Ability to build good working relationships with teams in support of a state policy agenda. 
  • Highly organized with the ability to juggle multiple projects at once, and respond rapidly and flexibly to changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to be an effective and persuasive communicator, both orally and in writing
  • Passion for issues affecting disadvantaged children
  • Experience working with business, law enforcement, military leaders, and/or other grasstops leaders.
  • Capacity to independently learn and work with technological platforms including Salesforce and Google Drive/Docs/Sheets.

Required Education

Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Preferred Education

  • Completed a formal community organizer training program or has received on-the-job community organizer training.
  • Spanish language proficiency is a plus, but is not necessary 

Travel

Travel will be required from time to time based on opportunities; on average 1 trip per month for 2 - 3 days.

Salary:

$75,000-$85,000 per year plus benefits, commensurate with experience
