About Caring Across Generations:

Caring Across Generations is a national campaign working to make care more affordable and accessible at every stage of life, while making sure caregivers are treated with respect and dignity. Founded in 2011 by Sarita Gupta and Ai-jen Poo, our campaign is focused on creating change in three ways: organizing a powerful movement of the Caring Majority - the majority of Americans who are directly affected by the need for care, fighting for groundbreaking policy at the state and federal level, and changing hearts and minds through storytelling and cultural organizing.

About the Position:

Caring Across Generations seeks an experienced, knowledgeable and driven Director of Policy and Advocacy  who will lead our legislative and policy advocacy at the local, state and federal level. The focus of the Director’s work will be developing the connection between advancement of federal and state policies that will advance our mission of changing how care is given, valued and received in the United States.  You will drive and lead some of the most consequential legislative and advocacy fights of our era, develop policy solutions that improve our care infrastructure and economy in a just and equitable way for everyone, not just the privileged few.

The Director of Policy Advocacy  will ensure our team working on state and federal policy change is coordinated to win strategic and transformational legislative and policy change  that lead to transformational  wins for caregivers who struggle to find,  afford, and receive  the care they and their loved ones need.  You will have the subject matter expertise necessary to  coordinate the co-creation of strategies and plans to advance our policy and legislative vision for a just and equitable care infrastructure and economy.

You will work with colleagues who are as dedicated and passionate about care, caregivers, and care workers as you are; who care deeply about racial and gender justice; and who, like you, are bold, strategic, and take responsibility for achieving substantial progress toward our mission every year.

You will leverage existing relationships, build new ones, and work with our allies  to continue to build and lead meaningful and mutually beneficial collaborations that advance shared goals and big wins for family caregivers, particularly making an impact for low income caregivers and caregivers of color.

Specifically, the work will include the following responsibilities:

  • Public Facing Leadership
      • Cultivate and maintain relationships among senior policy makers within relevant committees in Congress and government leaders and represent Caring Across to major stakeholders and allied partners.
      • Apply your skills, knowledge, and expertise of the systems that impact care, legislative, policy, and advocacy landscapes to help our team to advance our shared care mission.
  •  Represent Caring Across’ policy and advocacy priorities as a spokesperson with media, donors, and the public.
  • Internal Leadership
    • Provide the necessary subject matter expertise around the systems that impact care to the advocacy team, and across the organization.
    • Set policy priorities and legislative goals that advance the care agenda and direct the team in hitting those goals.
    • Oversee the legislative advocacy team, directly supervising the Associate Director of Research, the Legislative Manager, policy analyst, and potentially other team members as we restructure the campaign.
    • Work collaboratively with the Chief of Advocacy and Campaigns to develop an integrated strategy for the Campaign. Inspire  and effectively model deep collaboration in meeting  the overarching goals and priorities of the campaign.
    • Work closely with our Development Team to ensure strong partnership with funders and supporters of the campaign. Act as an effective steward of  program-restricted resources.
    • Serve as a member of the Strategy Team,.
    • Coach and develop the Advocacy Team, promoting a culture of high performance, accountability, continuous improvement and collaboration.

What you will bring:

We’re seeking candidates who excel in relationship-building, have deep subject matter expertise, are results-oriented, can be self-directed, and have exceptional strategic planning and execution, as well as project management skills. You should have:

  • 10-15+ years of progressive experience working in state or federal policy and advocacy on systems that impact care, and/or Capitol Hill with a demonstrated experience with policy drafting, systems like Medicaid Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) and developing legislative priorities.
  • 5+ years of supervision experience of senior leaders and teams
  • Strong knowledge of and deep experience with at least one of the following policy areas: aging, disability, workforce, paid family medical leave or other caregiving policies.
  • A proven track-record of leadership that resulted in wins, and experience developing, writing, and executing successful legislative plans.
  • Deep understanding of national advocacy campaigning.
  • Strong strategic and policy planning skills and commitment to processes that ensure transparency and communication in carrying out the work to achieve policy and advocacy goals.
  • Familiarity with larger progressive movement, players, partners, and allies.
  • A demonstrated commitment to racial equity, gender justice, and to empowering low- and moderate-income communities, communities of color, and immigrant communities.
  • A commitment to building a multicultural, anti-racist organization.
  • Acts with high integrity, professionalism, low ego, and camaraderie.

  • When travel resumes, travel at least on a quarterly basis is likely.
