Job Description

Responsible for activities related to prospect qualification, cultivation, and solicitation of major outright gifts and planned gifts to drive revenue for support of St. Jude’s mission. Prepare and manage cultivation and moves management plans for each prospect that includes on-going strategies for engagement and to include a targeted dollar goal for their support and deadline for expected solicitation.  Ensures that strategies employed move the donor toward gift closure. Develops solicitation plans for each donor that includes key personal visits to communicate the importance of their investment with the goal of ensuring their continued support for renewal and/or increase of their commitment.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Uses fund raising knowledge and interpersonal skills to build relationships with donors, their families and advisors in order to solicit significant gifts at the Major Gift level (focusing on gifts beginning at $100,000 - $1million dollars) to meet annual fundraising goals articulated in their performance appraisal and aligned with the overall organizational High Wealth Strategy. 
  • Uses a high degree of concentration to schedule and complete personal visits with potential high donors when appropriate throughout their region.
  • Utilizes technological tools (Donor Management Software, etc.) to capture details that will guide donor strategies; documents donor stories, donor visits and communications by recording  interactions in internal database; completes and reviews gift planning reports and donor progress reports, completes written documentation such as accounting forms, credit card documentation, mileage reports, and travel expense reports.
  • Executes high levels of discretion and fiduciary responsibility. Responsible for handling cash, checks and in-kind donations, following ALSAC policies and procedures.  Adheres to guidelines as set out by the Gift Acceptance Policy manual and submits exceptions to the Gift Acceptance Committee (GAC) for review.
  • Requires analysis of donor portfolio to execute efficient trip planning and time-management to maximize donor visits and adequate coverage of assigned territory.  Required to make a minimum number of visits, as specified in the Senior Philanthropic Advisor, Major Gift’s goal section of performance appraisal. Seeks opportunities to grow and exceed goal numbers.
  • Provides follow-up with prospects and donors to ensure continuity in gift planning process and assures the completion of gifts that are valuable and productive for St. Jude as well as the donor. Submits requests for and presents gift proposals and contracts.
  • Attends in person regional and national meetings and continuing education seminars.  All in person meetings may include some evening meetings and/or working meals. Participates in monthly teleconferences and webinars regionally and nationally. Willingness to travel outside assigned territory to support and provide assistance to colleagues in the field and at National Executive Office.

  • Maintains a current knowledge of tax law which impacts charitable giving, personal assets and estates.

  • Exhibits efficient trip planning and time-management skills to maximize prospects visited and adequate coverage of assigned territory.

  • Maintains effective communication with Gift Planning Management, the National Executive Office, and regional ALSAC employees. Collaborates with all ALSAC divisions and individuals to share donor and event information for the purpose of enhancing enterprise-wide donor experiences. Collaboration may include, but is not limited to, making presentations to community groups, businesses and other organizations; attendance at and/or staffing other regional/national events such as donor appreciation luncheons and receptions, galas, golf tournaments, walks and corporate partner events as requested. Initiates collaboration opportunities with ALSAC Field Ops offices and individuals to share donor and event information for the purpose of enhancing donor experiences. Maintains a team first mentality.

  • Utilizes strong and positive communication skills.  Responsible for staying current with internal and external industry related trends, processes, and policies. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of facts relating to the mission, research and patient care of St. Jude.  Requires ability to articulate current initiatives and programs of St. Jude and link them appropriately to supporters of St. Jude. 

  • Involves working in various environments under numerous lighting and climate control tolerances. Requires use of personal computer, mobile devices and other technologies.  Provides timely vehicle maintenance and appropriate registration. Completes annual compliance courses and all other Human Resource requirements.

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Requires special knowledge of gift planning and donor cultivation; ability to effectively interact with elderly people, people of great wealth, and executives; speak and write in clear and understandable manner for internal/external relations.

  • Understand extremely complex verbal and written instructions; understand data processing applications; knowledge ordinarily acquired through a bachelor's degree plus 7 years professional development experience and proven major gift experience.

  • A working knowledge of gift planning vehicles that produce income in near term in keeping up with the St. Jude mission required; requires travel approximately 50% to 70% of the time, including some evening and weekend work.
