American Players Theatre (APT) seeks Controller
General Description: Reporting jointly to APT’s Managing Director and the Board Finance Committee, the Controller oversees all financial and human resource operations at APT, ensures compliance with all financial reporting requirements, safeguards the continuing fiscal health of the organization and does it with the congeniality, generosity, and honest communication that are highly valued at APT.
The ideal candidate will be highly numerate, with experience in accounting and reporting, but will also possess strong communications skills and comfort in working with board members, artists, and hourly seasonal staff in a committed, mission and values driven organization.
The Controller is a member of APT's active and collaborative Senior Leadership Team, which together addresses short- and long-term planning around strategic, operational, financial and personnel matters across the organization. All members of this team are responsible for seeing that APT’s values and policies are honored in their department and across the organization, that personnel issues are properly and humanely addressed, and that financial resources are carefully budgeted and allocated both annually and in the long term. The Senior Leadership Team is also responsible for upholding APT’s values and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Key Responsibilities, including but not limited to:
- Oversee budgeting process, forecasting, monitoring and reporting on all areas of the organization including Operations, Capital, Foundation, and Apartment LLCs in both the short and long term Create and maintain accounting policies, procedures and controls to assure safeguarding of assets and accuracy of financial reporting Administer APT’s Human Resource functions including policies, health insurance, retirement and other benefits. Create, evaluate and maintain human resource policies and procedures including hiring and contracting Ensure proper preparation for the annual financial audit and provide recommendations for procedural improvements
- Serve as staff liaison to Finance Committee, Human Resources Committee, Investment Committee, and APT Foundation. Report directly to the board on financial matters Oversee the purchasing and retirement of fixed assets Supervise and support Business Manager who executes most day-to-day accounting functions Managing income/expense budgets for investment and administrative areas Balance financial systems and manage/project cash flow
- Serve as principal liaison with financial institutions providing banking and credit card services and short term and long-term loans to APT Negotiate and manage insurance relationships Coordinate financial planning for long term maintenance needs Maintain compliance with state and federal reporting requirements
Desired Experience and Skills:
- Financial experience with strong and up-to-date knowledge of accounting standards and practices Knowledge of non-profit accounting and financial management Experience and facility with financial reporting through Financial Edge or similar accounting software Knowledge of human resources including state and federal compliance, legal, regulatory requirements along with hiring, contracting, and onboarding practices Project management abilities and the vision to recognize and address the strategic and operational needs of initiatives
- Strong communication skills across various levels of a diverse organization and board and to outside donors, patrons, vendors, neighbors and other stakeholders Management experience in mentoring, motivating, and supporting financial and administrative staff Organizational leadership and strategic planning skills Knowledge of non-profit board structure and experience working with such boards Experience financing and planning capital and maintenance projects

Desired Start Date: After July 1
Work Days/Hours: Controller is a full time, year-round, exempt position in APT’s Senior Leadership staff. Hours are approximately 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday. Evening and weekend hours will be required at times throughout the year. The Controller position offers flexibility for some remote work.

Salary: Salary range is $70,000-$75,000 with a benefit package that includes PTO, health/dental/life insurance, and a 403B plan.
