Job Overview

Council for a Strong America (CSA) is a national nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., with additional staff in nine states. CSA seeks a State Director for Georgia who has the vision, relationships, and expertise to increase the impact of our organization on children’s policy in Georgia. This position will be responsible for establishing and inaugurating CSA’s Georgia State Office. 

The qualified candidate will be a senior-level, well-networked, and experienced leader in Georgia public policy, legislative advocacy, and/or campaigns. The State Director will manage one additional state staff position, working in a state team of two. With remote support from the national organization, the State Director will be responsible for all aspects of recruiting and mobilizing our bipartisan law enforcement, retired military, and business leader members in support of a state policy agenda that ensures Georgia children have the opportunity to succeed starting from birth.  

The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of the state’s political landscape, as well as experience working with policymakers and mobilizing people for a cause. The State Director must be self-directed and able to work independently. The successful candidate must also possess the diplomatic and interpersonal skills necessary to work with a wide variety of stakeholders, including our diverse membership, policymakers, partner organizations, funders, and teams across our national organization. Passion for policy advocacy, entrepreneurial instincts, and the determination of an organizer are character traits that are essential for success in this role.

CSA’s advocacy in Georgia will focus on increasing access to high-quality early childhood care and education, including child care, home visiting, pre-K, and other related programs and policies. In the future, the scope of work may expand beyond early childhood to include K-16 education, child nutrition, or children’s physical and mental health.

Responsibilities and Duties

The State Director:

  • Develops a state policy agenda
  • In support of the state policy agenda, develops an advocacy plan that mobilizes members to educate state policymakers.
  • Identifies policy opportunities in close coordination with state allies and coalitions.
  • Recruits and mobilizes law enforcement, retired military, and business leaders.
  • Cultivates relationships with policymakers, members, funders, allies, and media.
  • Recruits, hires, and supervises at least one additional state team member.
  • Takes a lead role in fundraising efforts for the state office, with support from the national Development Team.
  • Works closely with national teams based in Washington, D.C., as well as with other staff across the country.
  • Tracks the state office budget. 

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 10 years of leadership experience in policy, advocacy, organizing, and/or campaigns.
  • Strong understanding of the state legislative process and advocacy strategies.
  • Strong commitment to our mission and strategic vision; appreciation for the advocacy value of unexpected messengers from the business, military, and law enforcement sectors.
  • Superior diplomatic skills and ability to work effectively with complex relationships; ability to persuade others to join a cause and take action.
  • Ability to build good working relationships with remote teams.
  • Highly organized with the ability to juggle multiple projects at once, and respond rapidly and flexibly to changing priorities.
  • Capacity to independently learn and work with technological tools including Salesforce, Google Drive/Docs, and Slack.
  • This position is work-from-home and may be based anywhere in the state, but a regular presence in Atlanta will be required during the state legislative session. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in early childhood policy.
  • Existing networks with Georgia children’s advocacy organizations and/or funders.
  • Existing networks with Georgia state policymakers.
  • Fundraising or funder relationship management experience.
  • Valued professional backgrounds may also include: legislative staff experience, prior policy work in K-16 education, human services, and/or children’s health; experience working at the association or state level with our membership constituencies (law enforcement leaders, military leaders, business leaders); high-level campaign experience.

Education

Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Travel

COVID-19 travel restrictions are currently in place. Otherwise, frequent travel in-state for 1-3 days per trip is required; occasional travel out-of-state required. 

Salary range

$90K- $105K
