Job Details

Accountants One is partnered with a well-established non-profit in the Midtown area on their search for a Staff Accountant.

The Staff Accountant is responsible for maintaining an accurate accounting of the organization’s books, managing cash flow and trends, and other related treasury duties. 

Duties:

  • Lead month-end close activities and financial statement preparation
  • Manage and process bi-weekly payroll
  • Assist with daily treasury functions as necessary
  • Maintain accurate accounts within the GL
  • Prepare balance sheet account reconciliations as necessary
  • Responsible for reconciling retire and investment accounts
  • Responsible for direct and indirect cost allocations for payroll and shared cost
  • Prepare daily cash reporting/tracking of grants and development receivables
  • Daily posting of deposits and other receivables
  • Collaborate with Development staff at month-end to reconcile donation cash receipts, and procure all documentation required to properly record pledged donations
  • Collaborate with Development and Hunger Program leadership to account for in-kind donations
  • Collaborate with Hunger Program leadership to manage inventory program and absorption; properly account for inventory monthly and at year-end
  • Implement inventory module within Quick Books GL
  • Prepare and analyze budget and forecast variances and drivers
  • Develop and prepare financial presentations for finance and business audience
  • Provide financial support and documentation for the annual audit, Federal Funds Single Audit and the 990
  • Manage 1099 end of year close out process
  • Ensure full compliance for all applicable taxes
  • As necessary, update and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices, including control measures, and SOPs
  • Serve as backup to A/P for coverage, as necessary.
  • Drive process improvements and make recommendations.
  • Effectively communicate and present all critical financial matters to the SDFA
  • Actively participate in team meetings and provide solution-based ideas.
  • Interact professionally and transparently with internal and external stakeholders.

Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting, MBA or CPA preferred
  • Nonprofit experience working with government grants and funding
  • 7-10 years overall experience
    • Ideally 6+ years of financial experience with nonprofit organizations
    • 3-5 years of experience with government-funded housing programs (i.e ESG, PSH, HPRP, SSVF, etc.)
  • QuickBooks and MS Office proficiency 
  • Understanding of GAAP, fund accounting, A/P, A/R, cash applications 
  • Excellent communication

Hard skills:

The Staff Accountant should possess above-average financial acumen, GL navigation, understand GAAP accounting as it relates to nonprofits, and understand budget drivers and theory.  Exemplary understanding of grant structure, fund accounting and AP, AR and cash application.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Publisher, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.).

Prior use of Quick Books for non-profit

Experience

7-10 years overall experience; ideally 6+ years of financial experience with nonprofit organizations.  3-5 years of experience with government funded housing programs (i.e ESG, PSH, HPRP, SSVF, etc).

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting, MBA or CPA preferred

Industry Knowledge:

Requires nonprofit experience working with government grants and funding.
