The Epidemiologist directly assists the Director, Dracunculiasis Eradication Program to monitor the status of all national dracunculiasis eradication programs, and provide technical assistance to interrupt transmission, as warranted, via interactions with TCC Country Representatives and with the national GWEP coordinator/director. As requested, the Epidemiologist also briefs the Vice President for Health Programs and the Sr. Director, Office of International Support regarding the eradication of dracunculiasis and complies with directives as appropriate. The Epidemiologist will work with the program director to ensure GWEPs implement effective (a) interventions against GWD transmission, (b) surveillance networks for cases of GWD, (c) communication with communities, (e) personnel skill enhancement and training, (f) resource identification needed for program implementation, (g) and collaboration and communication with other government officials. Due to the travel locations, Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) will be required.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Provides technical and scientific expertise for programs in the areas of communicable disease, chronic disease and environmental epidemiology.
  • Designs, conducts and reports on the epidemiological study of diseases, collects and analyzes data and develops health education materials.
  • Manages and participates in investigations and surveys that have national and international impact.
  • Conducts program research and prepares operational and statistical reports.
  • May write publishable articles and papers.
  • Serves as a liaison to and works with other groups and organizations participating in related programs.
  • May travel internationally to supervise field operations.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A doctoral degree in a field related to area of research or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • International travel required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated ability to apply epidemiological principles and/or procedures to design program initiatives and/or studies that investigate risk factors for infectious disease and evaluate the effectiveness of program interventions.
  • Proficiency in model selection for and statistical analysis of correlated, hierarchical, non-parametric, and/or complex data, utilizing qualitative and quantitative analytic software (e.g., NVivo, MaxQDA, R, SAS, Stata) to perform analyses and generate reports.
  • Proficiency in geospatial analysis and the use of ArcGIS or Q-GIS software.
  • Skill in preparing documents and maps electronically with accuracy, in creating databases and maintaining and updating data layers.
  • Experience in using analytical results to inform evidence-based programmatic and policy recommendations, preparing and submitting manuscripts to peer-reviewed scientific journals, and presenting related findings at international fora.
  • Good communication and personnel management skills.
  • A history of working in African field and/or community based public health programs, or in community development in Africa, would be a distinct advantage.
  • Veterinary experience preferred.
  • Fluency in French is preferred.

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to Emory University on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs.  Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines of department of work.  Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
