Mid-March thru Mid-September 2022

Position Title: Sabbatical Music Director

Position Type: 15-20 Hours a week (six month contract)

Compensation: $16,000-$20,000

Reports to: Senior Minister

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta is in search of a temporary music director while their regular director of music is on sabbatical.

UUCA has one of the most eclectic and excellent music programs in Atlanta. We have a long tradition of presenting music from many different genres, cultures, and periods that reflect the diversity of Unitarian Universalist beliefs. 

In various capacities, the Sabbatical Music Director will:

  • Demonstrate excellence as a choral conductor, music educator, and rehearsal artist.
  • Demonstrate excellence as a co-creator of high-impact worship experiences.
  • Inspire hearty congregational singing during congregational worship services.
  • Communicate warmth and hospitality in the worship setting.
  • Bring a broad range of musical styles into our worship services.
  • Coordinate with fellow staff, congregants, and outside musicians. 
  • Contribute to the congregation's overall ministry by creating positive change in people’s lives.
  • Help create and maintain a healthy staff team culture.
  • Maintain healthy and appropriate boundaries with congregants.
  • Adhere to the music budget when hiring musicians, purchasing music and supplies. 

Specific duties of Sabbatical Music Director

  • UUCA’s Sabbatical Music Director must plan all special music and hymns to fit the themes of the services.
  • Schedule volunteers and hire musicians as needed.
  • Lead hymns and be a hospitality presence at Sunday morning services.
  • Attend a weekly meeting where our worship team plans future services. 
  • Plan and conduct choir rehearsals on Wednesday evenings, from 7:00 – 8:30 pm and 30 to 60 minutes before the Sunday services in which the choir sings. The UUCA Adult Choir currently sings approximately every other Sunday during the church year (September-May). Our other continuing musical groups rehearse on their own and are called upon for services and other special events. (Because of Covid precautions, the choir schedule 
  • As UUCA will be moving into a new building during this period there will likely be extra Wednesday rehearsals in the summer to prepare the choir. 
  • Meet periodically with Senior Minister, Sabbatical Music Committee, and Multimedia Team to ensure everything runs smoothly.
