Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and The Eastern Shore Overview Mission: Leading the effort to eliminate hunger in our community.

Vision: A hunger-free community.

Since 1981, the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, a member of Feeding America™ and the Federation of Virginia Food Banks, has been providing food for people experiencing food insecurity throughout Southeastern Virginia and on the Eastern Shore. To date, the Foodbank has distributed over 360 million pounds of food equating to over 300 million meals throughout their 4,745-square-mile service area.

The Foodbank distributes food to the community through Partner Agencies and program sites. During Fiscal Year 2019-2020 alone, they distributed over 15 million meals.

Partner Agencies (food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters) source food from the Foodbank to serve the community.

Foodbank Programs bring food to individuals in low-access, low-income communities to select healthy options on the go.

Transformational Impact

In addition to addressing the immediate community needs involving food insecurity, the Foodbank is committed to ending hunger by understanding and addressing the root causes of food insecurity that contribute to needing food assistance. In September 2019, they released a public report, Hunger and Food Insecurity: The Root Causes and Consequences. These five root causes guide the evolution of their work as they move toward holistically addressing these causes through programs, services, and community collaboration, in an effort to move individuals toward economic self-sufficiency.
