Laudato Si’ Movement serves the Catholic family worldwide to turn Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ encyclical letter into action for climate and ecological justice. Laudato Si’ Movement’s grassroots movement-building efforts draw on the combined gifts of nearly 800 member organizations and thousands of grassroots volunteers to help bring the Laudato Si’ message to life.

About the position

The Programs Manager North America coordinates the delivery of campaign strategies for LSM in English-speaking countries in North America and the Caribbean. Collaborating with and supporting partners and members throughout the North American region, the incumbent will provide vision, outstanding project management, and grassroots and grasstops organizing that strengthens and expands LSM’s highly successful campaign work. This staff member will build LSMs presence and help fulfill our mission of inspiring and mobilizing the Catholic community to care for our common home and achieve climate and ecological justice. This person will report to the Senior Programs Manager, North America, and will liaise with other programmatic teams as needed.

 

Areas of Responsibility

Movement building

  • Lead movement-building work and climate and ecological justice campaigning across English-speaking countries in North America and the Caribbean.
  • Manage the recruitment and development of participants for LSMs mobilization programs, including Laudato Si’ Animators (LSA), Circles, Chapters, Laudato Si’ Generation (LSGen), and Catholic sustainability programs. Recruit participants for key global moments, such as the Laudato Si’ film or the Season of Creation.
  • Support regional and national leaders of the LSM membership types: LSA, Laudato Si’ Generation, LS Circles, and Chapters.
  • Engage, collaborate with, and support LSM member organizations.
  • Identify opportunities and advance advocacy for climate justice and against fossil fuel development.
  • Recruit and manage volunteers to assist in capacity building and mobilization work.
  • Create educational and informational materials to support outreach and campaign needs, including the facilitation of webinars.
  • Utilize digital tools (social media and online platforms) to engage a base of supporters and parish leaders in North America

External relationships

  • Support the development of an outreach strategy to engage the Catholic community in North America (including the United States, Canada, and English-speaking Caribbean countries).
  • Cultivate and nourish partnerships with key Catholic leaders, Catholic stakeholders, climate-faith organizations as well as communities impacted by fossil fuels and the climate crisis.
  • Build and maintain relationships with Catholic media.
  • Represent LSM in public venues.
  • Ensure relevant grant reports and documents are completed in a timely manner.

Strategic thinking and planning:

  • Implement a plan for North America, including the development of support infrastructure, to engage LSM members to act towards the organization’s strategic goals of ecological conversion, sustainability, and advocacy.
  • Institute ongoing goal-setting, tracking, and evaluation systems to ensure maximum organizational impact.

Other

  • Understand LSM’s history, campaigns, and theory of change, and keep current with basic climate science, Church context, and climate policy and news in North America.
  • Contribute work towards LSM’s overall mission that is outside standard responsibilities and instead relies solely on geographic location or work capacity. ç

Requirements
Candidates should:

  • Demonstrate 2 to 4 years experience in non-profit organizations, preferably faith-based and/or environmental.
  • Demonstrate 1 to 3 years of experience in staff or volunteer management.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with ecological issues at both the level of impact and the level of policy, including the nature of the fossil fuel industry.
  • Preference for experience working with Hispanic communities.
  • Comfortable working in a prayerful faith-based environment.

  • Effective problem solving: Identifies challenges and takes a problem-solving approach, analyzes data to produce insights, and generates wise, actionable recommendations.
  • Leads oneself: Shows self-awareness and is curious about how he/she adds value to the organization. Fosters a growth mindset that is open to change.
  • Is inspiring, articulate, and persuasive, to compellingly present complex ideas to Catholic individuals and institutions and a wider audience, both as a public speaker and writer. A highly skilled relationship builder.
  • An understanding of the Catholic Church structure in North America, and existing contacts with different Catholic institutions and individuals (preferred).
  • Culturally sensitive: Is aware of differing cultural practices and can sensitively and authentically engage in a wide variety of relationships. Able to work seamlessly across borders and time zones.

  • English (with a strong preference for Spanish as well).
