Position Description for Envision Athens Executive Director

REPORTS TO:               CHAIR, BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Position Summary
The Executive Director of Envision Athens is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the non-profit organization.  Plan implementation, financial growth and management, human resources development, and strategic planning are the key responsibilities of the Executive Director.  The Executive Director will report to the Board of Directors through an annually elected Chair. 

Specific Duties and Functions

Board of Directors, Community Funding Partners, Community Engagement Partners
Develop an organizational culture that exudes collaboration and partnerships for the success of Envision Athens;  serve as the key resource in crafting and implementing an annual Program of Work based on input from community partners;  Serve as the essential convener and connector with local partners that will collaborate to achieve stated objectives;  serve as the key resource in relating policies, strategies and various courses of action to the Board of Directors, professional team and public to achieve the organization’s goals.  Create and maintain a relationship with the Board characterized by open and thoughtful communication, trust and a cooperative spirit;  assist in development and measurement of goals; identify new opportunities for growth and leadership in the Athens area; focus on continuous improvement in client service and program development to meet community needs; support and facilitate the Board’s work in exercising their leadership responsibilities through collaboration, communication and education around local issues and innovative trends in economic development.

Development
While using the annual Program of Work as a guide, explore funding streams, including sponsorships and grants, to enable more effective implementation of the Program of Work.

Leadership and Engagement
Promote the visibility of Envision Athens and serve as a leading voice for overall improved quality of life in Athens; serve as the lead spokesperson for Envision Athens; provide leadership and support in fostering cooperative community improvement programs locally and regionally to improve the quality of life in the Athens Area.

  • Building strong partnerships internally and with businesses, governments, and other community development organizations to achieve common goals and share knowledge and best practices.
  • Be an accessible resource, facilitating collaboration among all groups. 

  • Serve as a catalyst for visioning with local, regional and state leaders and organizations.
  • Develop, in collaboration with the Board of Directors, a marketing and public relations strategy including social media, materials, annual reports and resource materials for constituencies, all highlighting the impact of Envision Athens, Inc.

Programs and Fiscal Management
Direct the administration of all Envision Athens programs; provide consistent financial reports to the Board of Directors; demonstrate conscientious custodianship for Envision Athens’ assets; and ensure that Envision Athens complies with all governmental regulations. 


Organizational and Internal Leadership
Employ, lead, develop and empower a highly competent team who will drive the achievement of Envision Athens’ vision, mission and goals by playing a key role with both funding partners, collaborative partners and the extended community, while being responsible for innovative program management and administration.

Decision Making Authority
The Executive Director is the administrative officer for Envision Athens, reporting and coordinating with the Chair and Board of Directors.  The Executive Director has the authority and responsibility to implement decisions within the policies set forth by the Board, in a manner consistent with the articles of incorporation, bylaws, policies, and practices of the organization, and applicable federal, state and local laws.

Knowledge, Skills Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to be diplomatic, a strategic thinker, must be skilled at building consensus between complex and collaborative groups. 
  • Excellent communications skills (written, listening and oral), must be able to convey a vision to a diverse group of stakeholders. 
  • Familiarity with Athens community strongly desired. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in community organizing
  • Bachelors degree
