GSP Organizational Overview 

Grantmakers for Southern Progress (GSP) is a membership-based network of philanthropic leaders, practitioners, and individuals dedicated to leveraging resources for structural change in the South. 

Our mission is to transform philanthropic giving and practice in the South that prioritizes equity-focused structural change. As philanthropic giving and practices center equity this will facilitate the strengthening of the organizational infrastructure and the building of power within Southern communities to significantly increase racial, gender, and economic outcomes for people across the South. 

We envision a growing network of philanthropic organizations and actors who fund across a spectrum of tools and strategies, who have the explicit intention to increase investments in organizations that are led by people of color that are seeking to build political power, economic opportunity and social inclusion. GSP is a network that works towards philanthropy being in accountable relationship with directly affected communities. Therefore, we encourage and support our members to listen to and work with social movements and organization working for racial, economic and gender justice.  

Position Summary:

The Communications Specialist will be a key driver in establishing and executing processes to elevate awareness and visibility of GSP while engaging with the organization’s network. The Communications Specialist will manage GSP’s presence on social media platforms, as well as create and implement digital campaigns that help philanthropic members better understand the Southern movement ecosystem through a racial and gender equity lens. Additionally, they will provide communications support for GSP’s overall programming. This position will report to the Membership Manager.

Duties 

  • Monitor and maintain all GSP social media channels, regularly posting and interacting with audiences.
  • Serve as story writer, collaborator, researcher, and editor for GSP interviews, articles, reports, publications, and email marketing. 
  • Design graphics for publications, website, and social media.
  • Serve as the developer and curator of GSP’s Historical Archives and timeline. This will be a digital place to store and gather GSP’s origin stories, facts, data, and evidence from letters, reports, notes, memos, photographs, and other primary sources.
  • In partnership with the executive team, create protocols for documenting, storing, and/or destroying information regarding GSP programs and intellectual property.
  • Collaborate with GSP’s staff and steering committee to revise the existing communications strategy, with a focus on branding, messaging, and peer engagement.
  • Design collateral for GSP programming and convenings.
  • Assist in website updates and maintenance.
  • Collaborate and assist in the creation of data-based reports as needed.
  • Aid in the successful execution of bi-annual convenings, Racial and Gender Equity (RGE) cohort meetings, and other programming as needed.
  • Other duties as determined by the Membership Manager in consultation with GSP’s Director and the RGE Program Director.

Desired qualifications and experience:

  • 4+ years of experience with social media management, with a particular focus on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, and YouTube;
  • 4+ years of experience in graphic design, preferably using software such as Canva or Adobe (i.e. InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop);
  • 4+ years of experience writing blogs, articles, and/or reports. Journalism experience preferred;
  • Effective communication, including writing, speaking, and interpersonal communication;
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities;
  • Excellent time management and organization skills; great collaboration and teamwork abilities;
  • Proven self-starter with high level of initiative and execution;
  • Commitment to racial justice, gender justice, and structural change for social justice in the US South; and
  • Some travel is required. 

Job Details 

  • Salary range: $55,000 - $58,000, dependent on experience.  
  • A comprehensive benefits package that includes paid time off, insurance, professional development, and a retirement plan. 
  • GSP offices are in metro-Atlanta, GA. This position is open for individuals across the South with a preference for candidates in the metro-Atlanta, GA region.

GSP’s Race and Gender Equity Leadership Cohort Program creates an intentional space to build authentic relationships, sharpen systemic analysis and technical skills, cultivate passions and interests, and inspire a common vision to help shape and organize institutional philanthropy into a committed and effective partner to the movement for structural change in the South in service of justice. The program is a strategic intervention designed to identify, develop, and support justice-minded, anti-racist leaders, in partnership with communities in pursuit of equity and justice, to assert new vision, values, and ways of working that are focused on repairing the harm that white supremacy, anti-Blackness and anti-Indigeneity, sexism, homophobia, classism, and capitalism has done to Black, Indigenous, and other people of color as well as poor white people in the South.
