Job Title:                    Executive Director

Status:                        Regular Salaried, Full Time, Exempt

Salary Range:            $150,000 - $160,000 + Performance Incentives + Full Benefits

Reports To:                President of the Board + Board of Directors

Direct Reports:          Associate Executive Director/CFO, Clinical Director, Food Services Director, Development Director 

Summary:

The Executive Director will set strategy and vision, build the organizations culture of excellence, provide leadership and support for the team, and allocate capital/resources appropriately and in support of the mission. Working with the Board and Leadership Team, the Executive Director will set goals for the organization and work systematically to meet and exceed them.

The Executive Director will work with the Board and the Leadership Team to define gaps in community services and set priorities and direction to meet community needs. They will assess and evaluate strategies, decide how the organization will differentiate itself from other like-missioned organizations in the region, and will hire staff, set budgets, forge alliances, and build partnerships to further the mission. The Executive Director will invest heavily in the training, mentoring and capacity building with board and staff. Finally, the Executive Director will ensure that Board and staff are good stewards of mission and resources providing values based servant leadership. 

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Responsibilities

 

Mission Development - Organization’s Mission and Strategy

Works with board and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through dynamic and innovative programs, ongoing community gap analysis and mission based program development with a focus on maintaining mission relevance.

  • Responsible for implementation of existing and developing programs that carry out the organization’s mission
  • Responsible for strategic planning and implementation of best practice innovation that will ensure the Mission with a focus on meeting community needs
  • Focused on outcome management, growing excellence and working to exceed the expectations of those that are served

Fundraising and Resource Development

  • Must be an expert in all areas of fundraising, resource development, donor acquisition, grants and developing revenue diversity including an understanding of the San Francisco funding network
  • Have a clear understanding of the current and future financial resources needed to realize the organization’s mission
  • Working in concert with the board and development staff, implement a fund raising program and plan that meets the goals established for the organization
  • Be innovative in the creation of partnerships with businesses or other institutions that contribute to the organization’s resources
  • Must have an understanding of government contracts and grant billing

Program Operations and Program Development

Provide expert leadership in managing and administering the organization’s programs and services.  Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the organization’s mission, as well as an understanding of technical, operational, and ethical issues related to excellence in clinical care.

  • Works with the Board and Leadership Team to develop appropriate policies to ensure the efficiency, effectiveness and outcomes of programs
  • Through effective oversight and staffing, sets high standards of quality for the organization’s programs and works to reach operational excellence

Non-profit Operations/Business Strategies and Practice

Responsible for day-to-day operational management.  Works with Leadership Team to develop, maintain, and use the systems and resources that facilitate the effective operation of the organization.

The Executive Director Implements and maintains that the organization has in place:

  • Sound risk management policies, including adequate insurance coverage
  • Accounting, payroll, and cash management systems
  • Appropriate personnel policies and systems for staffing
  • Appropriate space management plans which help build an efficient and harmonious work place
  • Plans for the appropriate use of technology and technological systems
  • Ensures compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements

Finance

Provide solid non-profit business leadership including planning, budgeting and running operations aligned with best practice business strategies.  Ensure that qualified staff are hired to accurately monitor, assess, and manage the financial health of the nonprofit.

  • Knowledgeable regarding financial planning and resources, budgeting, management of the organization’s efficient use of resources
  • In partnership with the CFO presents financial reports to the board on a regular basis and submits an annual budget for board review, revision, and approval
  • Ensures that a clear and accurate accounting system is maintained, allowing the board to monitor the organization’s finances and operations in relationship to the approved budget and to make informed financial decisions

Board Governance

Works in close partnership with the Board to sustain and grow the mission of the organization.

  • Responsible for mission leadership – supporting and growing a board that is committed and focused on sustaining the organizations mission
  • Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions
  • Help the Board grow as Ambassadors of the mission

Professional Qualifications Needed   

  • A bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in a related field preferred
  • Able to work and thrive in a team based leadership environment.
  • 6 + years of successful senior nonprofit management experience
  • Ability to speak in public and articulate ideas
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Possesses proven critical thinking and problem solving abilities
  • Implements change leadership and change management
  • A good sense of humor
