Overview: Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta (“Federation”), a $52M complex not-for-profit, is continuing to build a diverse team of highly motivated individuals with a passion for not-for-profit work. Principal Functions: The Staff Accountant is responsible for managing the disbursement process for Federation, the Atlanta Jewish Foundation, and the ALEF Student Scholarship Organization (SSO), ensuring proper accounting. This person will prepare journal entries, perform account reconciliations, assist with providing information for the year-end audits and 990s, and more.

Federation's employees may work remotely two days a week and are given flexibility on their hours during their days in the office.

Responsibilities

General Accounting:

  • The Staff Accountant will work closely with various members of the accounting team, learning a variety of responsibilities by cross-training with colleagues
  • Reconcile accounts on a monthly basis, researching and resolving open items
  • Assist with preparation of annual budget and quarterly forecast
  • Preparing journal entries, analyses, and account reconciliations and assisting with monthly close processes.
  • Prepare documents for the year-end audit, 990, and 5500 tax return schedules as needed
  • Work closely with various members of the accounting team, including the two senior accountants and the accounts receivable team
  • Cross-train on a variety of areas and responsibilities

Disbursements:

  • Responsible for all aspects of the disbursement process, from administering the invoice workflow approval system, ensuring proper accounting, working with colleagues to resolve questions, to issuing payments for Federation, the Atlanta, Jewish Foundation, and the ALEF Student Scholarship Organization
  • Add new vendors to the accounting system, gathering appropriate W-9 documentation and remittance information
  • On a monthly basis, review and work to resolve older outstanding payments or other reconciling items and review open accounts payable
  • Oversee and administer PCard program, including training colleagues on the system and proper documentation and assisting/troubleshooting when needed
  • Train and support Federation colleagues on the disbursement process and workflow system

Compliance:

  • Responsible for preparing 1099s and 1096s annually
  • Responsible for annual corporate registrations for Federation and its related organizations, including eight supporting foundations

Overall:

  • Recommend improvements in efficiency and accuracy
  • Perform research as needed and respond to questions from Federation colleagues
  • Collaborate with other departments, community members, and donors in a friendly and professional manner
  • Promote the mission of Federation through superior customer service and the efficient use and care of resources
  • Maintain confidentiality of all information pertaining to donor and Foundation operations
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, CPA and/or Master’s degree a plus.
  • Two or more years of accounting experience preferred.
  • Public accounting experience a plus. Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficiency in other Microsoft Office products required.
  • Positive attitude and proven success as part of a team and in providing excellent customer service.
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.
