About the Position

The new role of Director, Climate Advocacy & Democracy Reform is based at the Foundation’s Seattle office and will serve a critical function in supporting the Trustee’s vision. The Director will work closely with the Trustee and the Executive Director to develop long- and short-term direction, goals, and objectives to guide the Foundation.  The Director will also play a substantive role in managing daily operations. As a part of a small team, the Director will have internally and externally facing responsibilities, driving analysis of unsolicited and solicited grant proposals, performing research, engaging with partners and in public settings, bringing intellectual prowess to strategy discussions, and directly engaging with the Trustee to gauge his direction, thinking and approaches. The right candidate will thrive and grow, continuing the Foundation’s catalytic approaches, and will be the leading candidate for Executive Director succession.

The job scope of the Director, Climate Advocacy & Democracy Reform will span topical issues, methodologies, and approaches, responding to opportunities identified by the Trustee, as well as themselves identifying or clarifying opportunities, particularly to strengthen the focus and outcomes in Health and Climate Change and Democracy Reform and is expected to play a vital thought partnership role in these initiatives to develop independent, highly leveraged initiatives and projects.

 

Position Priorities 

The successful candidate will report to the Executive Director and work directly with the Trustee and Executive Director on specific projects and initiatives. In the first 18-24 months, the top priorities for the position include:

  • Work with Trustee and Executive Director to develop long and short-term goals and strategic plans across the Foundation and each program area, including conducting research, landscape analysis and gap analysis for independent projects and initiatives proposed by the Trustee and Executive Director. 
  • Play a leadership role in conceiving, owning, and driving strategy, management, and operations, especially for the Health and Climate Change, and Democracy Reform program areas, catalyzing the Foundation’s approaches, partnerships, and impacts.
  • Stay current on conditions and trends in program areas as they relate to the Foundation’s initiatives, objectives, and program goals.
  • Prepare thorough and concise analyses of proposed grants, nonprofit organizations and NGOs, and independent initiatives and projects, including financial analyses. Receive, review, analyze, and prioritize all grant proposals, inquiries, and submissions for Trustee and Managing Board consideration.
  • Evaluate and prepare reports regarding the progress, outcomes and impacts of grants, programs, projects, and initiatives.
  • Play a leading role in helping to create, develop and strengthen Foundation communications and marketing, including launch of new website for the Foundation and social media outreach.
  • Represent the Foundation to the general public, grantees, consultants, other funders and Foundation partners. Help conduct outreach to potential funding and program partners.

 

Essential Qualifications

  • Demonstrated passion for and commitment to social justice, equity and fairness with significant experience leveraging impact in a diversity of focus areas.
  • Knowledge and experience with one or more of the Foundation’s program areas, most importantly at the intersection of Climate Change and Health, and/or Democracy Reform. 
  • 10+ years of experience in the private or nonprofit sectors, with increasing management responsibility.
  • Experience creating, developing, and leading projects, initiatives, or organizations. Entrepreneurial, with demonstrated initiative and capacity to work independently.
  • Effective public speaker and writer for and to different audiences, including media and the general public. Demonstrated understanding of how to leverage communications experts, strategies, and tactics to achieve impact.
  • Must be able to think, communicate, and act strategically and with resolve. Intellectually curious.
  • Must be able and capable of working collegially with others while maintaining focus on the Foundation’s program goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the purpose and function of a family foundation, including working effectively with a Trustee, and directed grant-making and initiatives.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint, software skills, etc.
  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, law, non-profit management, communications, or similar field or a field related to one or more of the Foundation’s program areas.

 

Job Requirements

  • Ability to travel as needed, locally, nationally and/or internationally.
  • Must be able to pass criminal background check.

 

Compensation

$120,000 - $145,000 DOE.

Benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance, generous employer contribution to retirement plan beginning at end of first year, three weeks’ paid vacation and sick leave.
