Senior Communications Manager

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced and highly organized Senior Communications Manager to join our Communications team. This is an exciting leadership opportunity to develop and implement strategic communications initiatives that advance our mission, program, values, and impact. The Senior Communications Manager will be responsible for CEO’s campaign, program, editorial, and digital communications. You will lead a growing team of creative and diverse communications specialists who are committed to social, economic, and racial justice.

This role will work with CEO’s Fund Development, Policy and Program teams to execute key strategic storytelling, digital marketing and fund development efforts. This position reports to the Director of Communications.

CEO's Staff Vaccination Policy

CEO has implemented an org-wide vaccination requirement that requires all new staff to be fully vaccinated or to have received one dose of the Pfizier or Moderna shot before their first day of work. We have made this decision for the safety of our participants and employees and to enhance our ability to continue to provide the vital services we offer to our participants. Who We Are 

The Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO) provides employment services to people with recent criminal convictions. Across the United States, over 6,000 people participate in CEO each year, transitioning to employment that supports themselves, their families, and their communities.

What began as a demonstration project of the Vera Institute of Justice in the 1970s to address employment barriers facing the formerly incarcerated following release in New York City has grown into the leading reentry employment organization in the country, where over 25,000 formerly incarcerated individuals have secured full-time employment since 1996. Since 2009, CEO has gained support to expand its programs through government, nonprofit, and private organizations including the GreenLight Fund, the Pew Charitable Trust, and the Nonprofit Finance Fund. In 2016, CEO embarked on a 5-year strategic plan to grow to serve 9,000 participants annually. 

Who You Are

  • You have 6+ years of progressive communications management experience in the nonprofit sector and 3+ years of managing a team
  • You have a commitment to CEO’s mission and interest in working in a fast paced, growing, results oriented nonprofit environment
  • You have demonstrated experience developing and managing strategic communications campaigns, ideally in the nonprofit sector
  • You have experience building and implementing communications protocols, workflows, and request tracking systems
  • You are able to prioritize competing projects and multi-task with diverse teams working in various locations across the country
  • You think creatively and work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment 
  • You are able to maintain a positive attitude and solution-based approach in high pressure or difficult situations
  • You are able to prioritize competing projects and multi-task with diverse teams working in various locations across the country
  • You have demonstrated ability to write and edit persuasive materials including talking points, op-eds, press releases, and messaging documents on deadline.
  • You have experience in engaging diverse audiences via email marketing, digital and social media 
  • You have experience in creating impactful digital content for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media platforms

The Nitty-Gritty

Responsibilities of the Senior Communications Manager include but are not limited to: 

Communications Strategy

  • Support Director of Communications to create and implement a five-year strategic communications plan aligned with the CEO’s strategic plan and values
  • Develop and execute successful strategic communications plans for key campaigns and projects, including advocacy and fundraising
  • Advise and support CEO campaign staff and program teams on communications strategies and best practices to elevate campaign and program effectiveness
  • Lead and evolve storytelling and narrative shift strategies
  • Track, evaluate, and report communications metrics that measure success and identify opportunities to shift or create new strategies and tactics
  • Conduct regular communications trainings for CEO staff, interns and volunteers
  • Provide expert communications advice to other CEO teams that advance our mission

Media Relations

  • Manage media inquires, develop media protocols, and support staff and external partners in preparing for media interviews
  • Create and edit press releases, media alerts, talking points, op-eds, quotes, and other press materials for campaigns, events and program initiatives
  • Track earned and document media coverage, maintain and enhance media contacts and preferred media databases
  • Support the logistics of press conferences and press calls
  • Train and support CEO staff to serve as media spokespeople
  • Build a crisis response strategy working with the Communications Director and other key leaders

Digital and Social Media

  • Manage CEO’s social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn
  • Manage CEO’s website development projects 
  • Lead the development and execution of tactics that increase our social media presence and digital engagement
  • Advise and support CEO staff and local site teams on digital and social media strategies and best practices, including facilitating trainings
  • Grow CEO’s email list and enhance our email marketing efforts
  • Lead the development and execution of digital media projects including videos and digital reports

Management

  • Manage the work and performance goals of Communications Associates and consultants
  • Develop and implement comprehensive communications protocols, workflows, and work request and outcomes tracking systems
  • Manage and enhance communications calendar, story bank, and Airtable project management system
  • Create communications department presentations for funders, executive and senior managers, and other key stakeholders 
  • Provide coaching, guidance, and professional development opportunities for team members, including providing resources for learning and providing day-to-day advising on project management

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $72,700-90,000/annually CEO's compensation philosophy considers a variety of factors including experience, internal equity, and the labor market associated with the city in which the position is located. This position can be located in any of the cities in which CEO operates. The labor markets associated with the cities in which CEO is based are variable, and the salary range included here reflects this. Our salary offer will fall within this range and will be reflective of the labor market of the city in which the position is based, as well the other factors named above.
