School Counselor and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Specialist 

The Opportunity: 

The School Counselor and SEL Specialist is a full-time position and will play a key role in implementing Global Village Project’s social emotional learning program.  In this role you will provide support and guidance for the implementation of the school’s multi-tiered system of support among staff and students, coordinate restorative discipline school wide, support students social emotional learning and best practices school wide . This position works closely with the Education Team and reports to the Director of Education & Impact. 

Responsibilities

  • Provide student support for developing social-emotional skills. 
  • Provide teachers support in developing social-emotional capacity as well as implementing best practices to promote SEL in the classroom. 
  • Consult with Director of Education & Impact and Student and Community Engagement Manager to set priorities, create action plans, and monitor progress across school 
  • Deliver classroom-based coaching to guide educators in establishing supportive learning environments and adopt supportive classroom management practices 
  • Participate in (and help facilitate) professional development for staff related to social-emotional learning to improve instruction and fidelity of implementation. 
  • Introduce structures and systems to scale best practices for student and adult SEL and share learnings across school.  
  • Support and potentially provide supervision for social work interns. 
  • Implement student support systems in alignment with GVP’s multi-tiered system of support and restorative and trauma informed practices.  
  • Contribute to a culture that values community, collaboration, and lifelong learning. 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Masters of Social Work with licensure: Licensed Associate Professional Counselor (LAPC) or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)  
  • Experience working with educators and/or students with a focus on SEL supports  
  • Deep knowledge of SEL frameworks and instructional practices that promote supportive learning environments and optimize adult social-emotional development 
  • Experience providing coaching and instructional assistance to peers 
  • Knowledge of best practices related to multi-tiered systems of support to provide tiered interventions to meet students’ social, emotional and behavioral needs, including restorative practices  
  • Familiarity with evidence-based approaches for SEL in the classroom  
  • Knowledge of best practices for coaching and providing feedback to adults 
  • Strong time management, analytical, interpersonal and organizational skills  
  • Passion for empowering and educating refugee young women who face structural barriers to their education. 
  • Proficiency working with multilingual, multicultural communities and a personal commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Classroom teaching experience or experience working in and educational setting minimum 3 years  
  • Experience working with teen girls 
  • Experience working with refugee or immigrant background students 
  • Experience with mediation and restorative justice practices 
  • Experience coaching teachers and giving constructive feedback 
  • Knowledge of refugee resettlement process 

Job Type: Exempt, full time. 

Salary range is $41,000-$45,000. GVP provides the opportunity to work within a vibrant community dedicated to teaching and learning, social justice, and service. We are located in downtown Decatur, across the street from the Decatur MARTA station. The position requires a criminal background check.
