Responsible for coordinating the day-to-day transport of animals to, from and between AHS Campuses, while maintaining harmonious relationships with AHS transfer partners including county shelters, rescue groups, humane societies and out of state transport partners. Works closely with volunteers and front-line staff to coordinate resources for animal transports to meet the growing needs of the organization.

  • Assist in coordinating and scheduling transfers between AHS facilities, working supportively and efficiently with shelter teams
  • Coordinate transfers to and from the AHS with outside partners
  • Drive transport vehicles to transfer animals into or out of the AHS, including all-day or overnight travel
  • Monitor and ensure that industry best practices are upheld for each transport including transport stress reduction, safe animals handling, and preventative measures for disease control
  • Assist in maintaining a robust list of transport and transfer partners to ensure maximum number of lives saved balanced with AHS available resources
  • Maintain regular communication with partners to ensure positive working relationships
  • Select appropriate animals for transport based on suitable temperament, health, the AHS placement standards, and availability of resources 
  • Coordinate and conduct appropriate testing and vaccination of selected transport animals in a timely and efficient manner
  • Ensure transported animals arrive/depart with all required documentation per AHS and Department of Agriculture guidelines
  • Work closely with department staff and volunteers to accomplish departmental and organizational goals 
  • Liaison for internal staff and outside partners with regards to questions, building relationships, and conflict resolution
  • Handle agency funds in accordance with established verbal and written agency guidelines
  • Provide detailed department data to immediate supervisor upon request
  • Maintain opportunities for staff and volunteers to participate with the transport program
  • Assist in maintaining the transport vehicles and ensure they remain stocked with the appropriate supplies; immediately report any vehicle issues or concerns to immediate supervisor
  • Ensure compliance with all organizational, state and federal safety policies and procedures in addition to SDS rules
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • A passionate advocate for and desire to work with animals
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Minimum of one-year animal handling experience; requires humane handling of animals at all times
  • Knowledge and understanding of animal welfare in a shelter environment required
  • Knowledge of animal diseases, medications and treatment protocols
  • Proven ability to exercise sound, independent judgment
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality in sensitive, complex, and/or controversial situations
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing
  • Ability to work effectively as a team player
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to multi-task effectively and shift focus easily and often
  • Basic computer knowledge in a Windows environment, PetPoint experience preferred
  • Physical efforts require constant bending, stooping, and lifting up to 50 lbs. with reasonable accommodations; ability to work in a high noise level area
  • Valid Georgia driver’s license or ability to obtain a valid Georgia driver’s license and must be an insurable driver by the AHS insurance provider
  • Flexible schedule; may be required to drive AHS transport vehicles locally and out-of-state – in some instances requiring overnight stays
