Nicholas House first opened its doors in 1982. At the time, there wasn’t a single shelter in Atlanta capable of housing families experiencing homelessness for more than a night. We assist families experiencing homelessness in making the transition to self-sufficiency in a structured but home-like environment through one of several housing programs. Nicholas House is committed to assisting its families in attaining three goals that form the basis of self-sufficiency:
- Earning a living wage;
- Maintaining the physical, mental and social health of parents and children;
- Maintaining safe and stable housing.
Nicholas House understands that providing basic subsistence – food and shelter – is necessary but not sufficient to prevent families from becoming homeless again. That is why we provide wrap-around housing services and follow families for up to two years after graduation from our programs to ensure that they remain self-sufficient and stably housed.
In 2020, we helped 568 parents and children from 157 different families on the path to self-sufficiency while keeping their families intact. During that time:
- 44% of Nicholas House families increased income
- 30% of Nicholas House families decreased debt;
- 96% of the children in our After-School Program maintained or improved their behavior;
- 100% of children in our shelter matriculated to the next grade level;
- 100% of children in our shelter improved their report card by a letter grade or more;
- 36% of children in our shelter were on the honor roll;
- 90% of families remained self-sufficient a year or more after exiting programs.
Where we are:
Atlanta has the highest income inequality in the nation. On average, the lowest 20% of earners make under $10,000/year while the highest 20% earn over $250,000/year. Surveys show that in 2020 there were over 1,000 homeless family members on the streets of metro Atlanta every night.37% of Georgia’s homeless – 42% in Fulton County and 51% in DeKalb—are families with children experiencing homelessness. Families often go unseen because parents want to keep their children safe, which often means staying out of the public eye as they live in cars, abandoned buildings, extended-stay motels or on the streets. Families often have to face being split up in order to receive services, since shelters can divide populations served by gender and by age. The average age of a homeless person in the United States is 9 years old.
In August 2021, our Executive Director of fourteen years passed away unexpectedly. The board has stepped up to fill and find interim support, and we are excited to find a candidate who can help lead the organization into its next chapter.
The Executive Director is responsible for upholding Nicholas House’s mission, leveraging Board expertise, increasing awareness within the community, leading day-to-day operations, and ensuring the organization meets its financial objectives. We especially seek a nonprofit leader who has demonstrated operational excellence with a passion for serving families experiencing homelessness. Building relationships across all stakeholder groups will be imperative to your success, and we expect candidates to have experience leading diverse teams. Everything we do is with an eye towards results. The Executive Director is the Chief Executive Officer and reports to the Board of Directors.
The Executive Director has a broad range of leadership, management and oversight responsibilities, including but not limited to:
- Ensuring that the organization has a long-range strategy and consistently works towards progress on that strategy.
- Working with the Board in preparing the annual budget and ensuring the organization operates within budget guidelines. Ensuring organization is maintaining official records and documents and staying compliant with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Maintaining a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in serving families experiencing homelessness.
- Developing effective systems to track progress and regularly evaluate program components to measure outcomes that can be effectively communicated to the Board, funders, and other constituents.
- Hiring, coaching, and managing staff, including driving cross-functional development.
- Leveraging Board’s expertise and connections to push the organization forward.
- Establishing, managing, and stewarding strategic relationships with donors, sponsors, partner organizations, individuals, government agencies, elected officials, and other stakeholders. Delegating this relationship management when appropriate.
- Serving as an external face of the organization with the ability to tell Nicholas House’s story, and ensuring all activities and programs are properly publicized.
- Developing an annual plan for fundraising from diverse funding sources.
- Ensuring there are redundancies and succession plans are in place throughout the organization.
- Being available to case workers, Boulevard location staff, and families as needed.
- Other duties as assigned and/or as required with the evolution of the organization.
- Ability to manage all responsibilities as listed above.
- Must have led a team within a nonprofit organization, and developed business processes and strategy for that team.
- Passion for serving families experiencing homelessness is required, and prior work with the population is preferred.
- Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing across all stakeholder groups.
- Experience leading diverse teams with an eye towards development is required.
- Must have demonstrated operational excellence in one or more of the following areas: financial management, process improvement, fundraising, strategic planning, and/or compliance.
- Existing community and government relationships are preferred. Political savvy and experience with influencing legislation also preferred.
- Interested in candidates who are able to balance being analytical, visionary, creative, and innovative.
- Ability to update processes to be technology forward is preferred.
Total Rewards & Compensation Package:
- $115,000-$125,000 depending on experience and track record of success
- Variable compensation of up to 10% of salary based on performance (guaranteed as a good faith gesture in the first year)
