POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Director of Communications is responsible for leading and implementing Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services’ (SFBFS) Marketing and Communication plans and strategies including public relations, media relations, on-line giving, digital communications, key messaging, storytelling, and brand experience. The Director of Communications works with the Director of Development and President/CEO to manage strategic communications planning, marketing, public relations as it relates to fundraising efforts. He/She Marketing is responsible for both internal and external factors related to organizational messaging.

The Director of Communications will (including but not limited to):

  • Craft universal messaging to be shared with public about SFBFS organization
  • Serves as primary public speaker with President/CEO on behalf of SFBFS in all media, public, print, radio, TV and interview formats
  • Creates and implements annual communication calendar/plan
  • Train and lead staff to support marketing efforts including production of all collateral items
  • Oversee Web site development and maintenance along with social media presence
  • Act as point of contact for media agencies and complete public relations duties for daily operations and special events including press releases and media outreach
  • Participate in outreach events, specifically speaking to groups about how their contributions can impact programs and services
  • Lead staff communications training
  • Other duties as assigned

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent with at least 4 years of progressive experience in a similar role
  • 3+ years in Director level role, w/ staff supervisory experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge in nonprofit fundraising and marketing
  • Experience and knowledge of project management and coordination
  • Ability to maintain knowledge and professional development in market research, business trends and communication trends that may impact needs and resources
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Office and other software
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • A working knowledge of Sacramento area and various channels of communications throughout the county
  • Visionary and creative leadership in communications with an outstanding record of accomplishment
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to build strong relationships with community leaders, board members, staff, and volunteers
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to make inspiring presentations to the public and media

POSITION DETAILS

  • Full-time, exempt position; Monday - Friday; occasional weekends and holidays as needed
  • SFBFS’ Family Services campus location, with occasional travel to Food Bank Services campus
