Newcomer Teacher / ESOL Specialist 

The Opportunity: 

The Newcomer Teacher / ESOL Specialist is a full-time (approximately 40 hours/week) teaching position that requires an experienced educational professional who is committed to excellent teaching, lifelong learning, and strength-based pedagogy. The Newcomer Teacher will serve as a specialist for GVP’s Form 1 students learning English and will provide leadership to staff in the areas of teaching ESOL, emergent literacy, and developing numeracy. The teacher must be open to collaboration and curriculum development. The Newcomer Teacher will report to the Director of Education & Impact, working closely with the Education Team and must be willing and able to coordinate work with volunteers and tutors. Position to begin mid-December to early January. 

Responsibilities: 

• Teach English Language Arts, Math and Guided Reading classes and facilitate morning advisory classes and study hall. Co-teach Science and Social Studies classes as needed. 
• Collaborate with faculty on curriculum development for Guided Reading classes, Math Workshop, STEAM integrated units of study, literacy workshops, summer clubs, and specials classes.  
• Document curriculum and instruction and create differentiated units of study and lesson plans for students.  
• Manage volunteers in the classroom setting.  
• Collaborate with faculty on publications and presentations to share teaching and learning models.  
• Collaborate with staff, families, and community partners to provide culturally responsive, real world learning experiences.  
• Co-lead one annual Authors’ Tea (student learning showcase).  
• Integrate arts, social and emotional learning, and restorative practices into curriculum and instruction.  
• Attend meetings and contribute to staff professional development sessions.  
• Maintain state teaching certification.  
• Contribute to a culture that values community, collaboration, and lifelong learning. 

Required Qualifications: 

• Teaching degree and certification (primary & middle preferred)  
• ESOL certification and experience 
• English Language Arts certification and experience 
• Three or more years classroom teaching experience and demonstrated high-quality classroom instruction 
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 
• Willingness to embrace an organizational culture that values strengths-based learning and restorative and trauma informed practices 
• Passion for empowering and educating refugee young women who face structural barriers to their education. 
• Proficiency working with multilingual, multicultural communities and a personal commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion. 
• Self-motivated and proactive commitment to ongoing learning and improvement, both as an individual and as part of a whole staff team. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Experience using Guided Reading teaching and assessment approaches 
• Experience using Lucy Calkins Writing Workshop approach 
• Experience using WIDA (World-Class Instructional Design and Assessments) with English Learners 
• Experience teaching emergent literacy  
• Experience with and enthusiasm for arts integrated learning 
• Enthusiasm for learning and sharing through presentations & publications 
• Experience co-teaching 
• Experience working with newcomer or SLIFE students  
• Experience incorporating restorative and trauma-informed practices in the classroom 
• Leadership experience 
• Experience using Google Drive 

Job Type: Exempt, full-time 

Salary range is $39,000- $47,000.  All full-time employees are eligible to participate and join in GVP’s health, dental and life insurance plans. GVP provides the opportunity to work within a vibrant community dedicated to teaching and learning, social justice, and service. We are located in downtown Decatur, across the street from the Decatur MARTA station. The position requires a criminal background check.
