Job Details

Seeking a dependable and creative team member to rigorously lead managing grants, fundraising, and development systems alongside a high-volume and successful development team.

About the Position

Namati, and the global network of justice advocates we serve, rely on a set of systems and processes that allow us to manage our fundraising efficiently, effectively, and reliably. Our fundraising team has a strong track record of success, including significant recent wins enabling unprecedented organizational growth. The Development Operations Officer will become a central player on our small but effective team.

We seek a teammate who genuinely enjoys, and has demonstrable experience working on, the operations and administrative side of an organization or company. You feel satisfaction when you bring both precision and creative thinking to operational roles involving somewhat mechanical data systems and processes. You understand that “behind-the-scenes” work is critical to the achievement of any important mission. Fundraising experience is preferred, but not required.

Our ideal candidate is impeccably organized and a reliable, confident team player. This person should possess exemplary process management and communication skills, outstanding attention to detail, drive to excel in all responsibilities, and capacity to grow in response to the needs of our growing team and organizational budget.

The Development Operations Officer will report to the Director of Development. Responsibilities include:

  • Manage all operational aspects of the Development department.
  • Track foundation proposals and reporting processes, collaborating with relevant team members to ensure impeccable, timely grant submissions.
  • Understand, manage, and improve our existing Salesforce program.
  • Oversee knowledge management, including filing and tracking all relevant internal and external materials in Google Drive.
  • Oversee all shared projects in our project management software Asana, and help the team use the system optimally in  their own workflows.
  • In partnership with the Director of Development, manage the fundraising forecasting system -- ensure that the forecasting chart is populated with accurate and up-to-date information, for use by both development and finance teams.
  • Maintain individual donor gifts processing and stewardship systems.
  • Oversee systems for prospecting, research, and pipeline development.
  • Manage email communications with funders via MailChimp.

Here’s what you might have tackled in the past week:

  • Managed communications across several teams to ensure a timely submission for a foundation funder, paying careful attention to all reporting requirements.
  • Scheduled a kick-off call with teammates across multiple time zones for a large submission to a new government funder;  developed a detailed checklist for elements to include in the proposal,  ensured that each element has an owner, communicated any questions to the funder, and carefully read the fine print to confirm our eligibility.
  • Reviewed several online databases for new funding opportunities, flagging any promising opportunities for the Development Director.
  • Updated Salesforce with recent donations, and ensured donors received timely thank-you letters with accurate tax deduction information.
  • Sent reminders to teammates about several reporting deadlines coming up in the next 30 days, and built a plan to make sure each team will have what they need to complete these reports.

About You

  • Organized and an exceptional project manager: You know how to bring together geographically dispersed colleagues at several levels  (often with competing deadlines and priorities) to get things done. You can monitor all the details across multiple projects while ensuring the larger strategic plan is on track.
  • Exceptional communication skills: Your written and verbal communications evidence clarity of thought, sharpness of analysis, and you’re able to tailor your communications to meet people where they are.
  • Technologically savvy: You’re a technophile; when working with a new program or application you quickly become fluent. You understand the stakes of securing our data and will do what it takes to protect and optimize it. You have (likely 2+ years) experience managing complex relational databases.
  • Collaborative and service-oriented: You greet everyone you encounter with a collaborative spirit, kindness, and empathy. You like helping the team and serving our communities.
  • Growth mindset: You’re always seeking to better yourself and your work, and you will push yourself to the peak of performance to help fulfill our mission. In service of that growth, you welcome and delight in feedback from supervisors, peers, reports, and anyone else

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience as a Salesforce administrator and/or experience with Salesforce nonprofit processes are a plus.

Company

Namati is dedicated to placing the power of law in the hands of people.

For billions of people around the world, the law is broken. It’s an abstraction -- or worse, a threat -- but not something we can use to exercise our basic rights.

Namati is building a global movement of grassroots advocates who empower people to understand, use, and shape the law. These “barefoot lawyers” form a dynamic, creative frontline that can squeeze justice out of even broken systems.

In the past five years, Namati and our partners have worked with over 65,000 clients to take on some of the greatest challenges of our times: protecting community lands, enforcing environmental law, and securing basic rights to healthcare and citizenship.

We track data on every case and use that information to advocate for systemic changes, like better policies for land governance in Liberia, environmental regulation in India, and healthcare delivery in Mozambique.

And we're joining forces for change. Namati convenes the Global Legal Empowerment Network -- over 1400+ groups and 5,000+ individuals from 150 countries learning from one another and bringing justice to communities in every part of the world.

Our work has gained recognition. Namati and the Global Legal Empowerment Network were recognized with the prestigious Skoll Award in 2016. Honoring CEO Vivek Maru as a fellow, Ashoka called ours the “best law-for-all model we’ve seen.” We’ve been published and featured in the Guardian, the New York Times, and Forbes. And we’ve had some hefty supporters, including an advisory board with leaders like Amartya Sen, Mo Ibrahim, Fazle Abed, and Madeleine Albright.

As we move into our next phase, we’re growing our global team of passionate, results-oriented, big-hearted advocates, united by a common mission and a strong culture:

  • Our mission is our North Star. It’s why we all wake up every day. We pour our hearts into this work. We’re innovators and changemakers. We are a young, energetic social enterprise and we know that our work is urgent. We believe in being nimble and doing what works. Our work makes real, tangible, measurable progress in people’s lives. We take abstract concepts – rule of law and human rights – and make them concrete, helping people find solutions that improve their lives every day. We walk our talk. Our movement is about legal empowerment and we bring this spirit of empowerment and collaboration to all our partnerships. We hold humility as a core value: we lead when necessary and follow when necessary. We are a truly global organization. Our offices are located in Delhi, Freetown, Maputo, Nairobi, Washington DC, and Yangon, and our staff come from all corners of the world. We are united by our common mission. We see our people as our most valuable resource. We bring on individuals of the highest caliber and character and we mentor, train, and support our staff.   We hold one another in the highest esteem. Our work relationships are built on deep abiding respect and love.
