Under the direction of Independent Living Management, the Independent Living Instructors are responsible for maintaining a supportive environment which fosters growth and facilitates the development of greater independence, confidence, and sense of well being. The staff will provide appropriate assistance tailored to the needs and aspirations of the individual students to enable each to advance in greater independence.

Coaching and role-modeling activities of daily living which include: morning and evening routines, personal hygiene, deep cleaning, daily chores, meal planning, cooking, budgeting, shopping, healthy nutrition, social interactions, community outings, and use of public transportation. Creating and maintaining the warmth of a home within the dormitories. 

MAIN DUTIES

  • Perform daily record keeping on each student, as well as assessments
  • Integrate Independent Living Skills into practical application
  • Facilitate social interactions and social activities
  • Support students with daily living activities
  • Transport students as needed using the Meristem vans
  • Money handling responsibilities
  • Accompany students on cultural and outdoor outings
  • Model courtesy and awareness of others at all times
  • Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings with Independent Living Manager
  • Respond appropriately in case of emergency
  • Perform other duties as assigned

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Intermediate to advanced ILS such as; cooking, cleaning, finance, and social skills
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize, think critically, and problem-solve
  • Interpersonal sensitivity
  • Must be both reliable and flexible
  • Demonstrate insight and the ability to articulate it
  • Demonstrate good judgment, including the ability to evaluate, make decisions, and anticipate consequences
  • The initiative, motivation to learn, reflective practice, and passion for self-improvement
  • Understand healthy nutrition and an ability to cook for up to 6 students.
  • Experience in Independent Living or Supported Living is a plus.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid California Driver License and the ability to drive a van.
  • One year of experience working with people on the Autism spectrum, I/DD, or in a related field

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in special education, education, educational psychology, psychology, human development, behavioral analysis, early childhood education, speech/language pathology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, social work, or closely related field.
  • Experience working in Independent Living or Supported Living Services programs

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Not limited to the following:

  • Physical ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Must have the ability to sit for extended periods of time
  • Exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal
  • To see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids
  • Hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone
  • Speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in person and on the telephone
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Physical ability to lift up to 35 pounds
