About The Tech Interactive

The Tech Interactive, a nonprofit in San Jose, is seeking a creative and relentlessly positive individual to join our marketing team. You will be passionate about education; the problem-solving potential of science and technology; and The Tech, whose mission is to inspire the innovator in everyone.

Our success is dependent on building teams that include people from different backgrounds and experiences who challenge each other’s assumptions with fresh perspectives. To that end, we look for a diverse pool of applicants including but not limited to those from historically marginalized groups — women, people with disabilities, people of color, people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or nonconforming, veterans, and people from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

The Role

The Social Media Manager lives and breathes stories and is always thinking of creative new ways to tell them. You will lead strategy and execution on social media and build online communities to support the mission of The Tech.

You will plan, create, collaborate on, edit and publish content that inspires and educates people of all ages and backgrounds. You enjoy all facets of the creative process, from the white board to the wrap-up. You get how video has a unique ability to touch our emotions and make a lasting impact.

The Tech requires candidates to pass a background screening and provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination as conditions of employment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop strategies, project plans and campaigns that build audience and engagement for current and emerging social media networks — including but not limited to TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Yelp and Zigazoo — to help meet institutional goals.

  • Bring a flair for creating and managing inspiring video storytelling — whether it’s an emotional longform recap of the year or a 10-second TikTok that viewers can’t scroll past.

  • Create content — photos, video, words — that increases The Tech’s relevance to the community in our areas of expertise, including problem-solving, teacher professional development, climate change, biodesign and social entrepreneurship.

  • Develop and maintain a calendar of organic campaigns to support educational and revenue goals. Work with others on the Marketing and Creative Services teams to incorporate content they develop into this calendar.

  • Champion efforts to be a leader in our industry in the creation of mobile-first video for mission-related purposes.

  • Act as the voice of The Tech on social media.

  • Monitor social media conversations, respond when appropriate, and alert manager when action is required.

  • Establish and manage relationships with influencers and other promotional partners.

  • Provide live coverage of events, including occasionally at night and on weekends.

  • Support reporting on social media metrics and use the data to refine the organization’s plans and develop new strategies.

  • Serve as The Tech’s in-house expert on emerging social media trends, tools and best practices.

  • Conceptualize and manage offers and contests.

  • Take photographs as needed.

  • Other duties as needed.

Key Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English, the sciences, engineering or a related communications or sciences field.

  • At least 3 years’ experience in digital strongly preferred.

  • Strong video storytelling and editing skills.

  • Strong writing and editing ability, along with the good judgment to represent a trusted nonprofit brand directly to the public.

  • Deep understanding of multiple social media platforms as a marketer and user.

  • Understanding and knowledge of social media trends and best practices and willingness to share that knowledge with others in the organization.

  • Ability to work quickly and independently while juggling multiple projects with competing timelines.

  • Experience with social media monitoring and scheduling tools, such as Sprout.

  • Experience with photography including comfort with capturing engaging photos of individuals in crowded settings.

  • Strong project management skills and attention to detail.

  • Experience with other forms of digital marketing a plus.

Successful job candidates don’t always meet every qualification listed in a job description. We encourage candidates who meet many but not all of the above qualifications and are inspired by this work to apply.
