Job Description—Deputy Director

Background

Founded in 1997, LandWatch’s mission is to protect Monterey County’s future by addressing climate change, community health, and social inequities in housing and infrastructure. LandWatch’s accomplishments include the adoption of public policies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, support urban infill, encourage affordable housing, and protect drinking water and agricultural lands.

By encouraging greater public participation in planning, LandWatch connects people to government, addresses human needs and inspires conservation of natural resources. LandWatch has served as a model for other community-based advocacy organizations throughout California and the West.

The Deputy Director reports to the LandWatch Executive Director and collaborates with partner organizations and a highly talented, geographically dispersed team of lawyers, policy analysts, and marketing and fundraising professionals. The position is full-time, exempt. Compensation is commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities

  1. Programmatic Activities (40%). The Deputy Director is responsible for collaborating with the Executive Director on a wide range of land use planning, policy, and development issues.
  • The Deputy Director will analyze and draft comments, and draft and present testimony, on general plans, land use plans, development projects, and other developments in relation to LandWatch’s principles and California law, including the California Environmental Quality Act.
  • The Deputy Director will collaborate with the Executive Director on land use strategy, including grassroots organizing and litigation.
  • The Deputy Director will also carry out other programmatic and grassroots organizing activities as identified and supervised by the Executive Director.
  1. Fundraising (25%). The Deputy Director is responsible for implementing the LandWatch fundraising program, including major donor fundraising, foundation grants, membership recruitment and retention, direct mail, and fundraising events.
  • The Deputy Director will plan and coordinate all activities involved with prospect identification, research, cultivation, solicitation, “closing,” and stewardship of major donors.  In addition, specific duties include organizing telephone appeals, supervising the implementation of major donor events, scheduling and meeting with prospects, presenting proposals, soliciting gifts, following up on pledges, thanking donors for their gifts, and ensuring that on-going stewardship prepares donors to make subsequent gifts. In carrying out his or her responsibility for the major donor program, the Deputy Director will receive the active assistance and participation of the Executive Director, the Board of Directors, and other friends of LandWatch.
  • Direct mail fundraising responsibilities assigned to the Deputy Director include planning and drafting appeals in collaboration with LandWatch’s marketing/fundraising consultant, supervising the sending of direct mail appeals, and analyzing and reporting the results of direct mail appeals.
  • Fundraising event responsibilities assigned to the Deputy Director include the responsibility for planning and supervising the annual fundraising luncheon and implementation of other such fundraising events.
  1. Marketing and Membership (25%).
  • The Deputy Director will have primary responsibility for the preparation of public outreach and marketing materials, including the newsletter and brochures. He or she will also take direct responsibility for those portions of the LandWatch website related to mission, marketing and membership, and will help develop and implement trainings, tours, and other public and membership programs.
  • Membership activities assigned to the Deputy Director include overseeing the design and maintenance of the membership database, planning, drafting, and supervising the implementation of membership mailings and email alerts, supervising membership renewal notification and the sending of “thank you” letters, planning and supervising membership events, and following up on events to recruit new members.
  1. Administration (10%). The Deputy Director will gain familiarity with and eventually exercise oversight of the administrative functions of the organization, including oversight of bookkeeping, budgeting, financial reporting, a donor management database (i.e., Little Green Light), and other administrative tasks.
