Community Engagement Coordinator

Second Helpings Atlanta (SHA) is a nonprofit food rescue & hunger reduction organization whose mission is to reduce food insecurity and food waste in the Metro Atlanta area. SHA serves as the link between a network of food donors who supply food and partner agencies who feed the hungry on a daily basis. Learn more about our work at https://secondhelpingsatlanta.org/

The Community Engagement Coordinator position is part of SHA’s Operations team and reports to the Operations Manager. Central to this role will be leading our in-person volunteer and community events, developing and sharing educational content related to SHA’s mission, seeking creative ways to engage the community more deeply with SHA’s work, and helping to coordinate and execute special projects. 

Community Engagement Coordinator Responsibilities:

In-Person Volunteer Events

  • Run in-person volunteer events as the primary SHA liaison. Events include but are not limited to large food rescues, non-traditional format food rescues, community service projects, and volunteer packing/sorting activities.
  • Coordinate all logistical details for the events in regards to the volunteer experience.
  • Monitor and manage volunteer sign ups for special events
  • Communicate with event volunteers and assure that volunteers have all needed information to successfully attend and complete the event.
  • Develop orientation materials for relevant events (with Development Manager and Marketing Coordinator).
  • Provide feedback and implement ways to improve volunteer experience at events
  • Develop special teams within the volunteer pool for non-traditional volunteer experiences (large food events team, truck driver team, etc.)
  • Work with the Marketing Coordinator to highlight special volunteer opportunities 
  • Complete any other duties as required to ensure effective in-person volunteer events

Educational / Community Programs

SHA programs that increase awareness about food waste & food insecurity and develop the next generation of volunteers to fight hunger and reduce food waste in metro Atlanta through educational content & activities. 

Food For Thought

  • Develop and refresh content for SHA’s “Food For Thought” educational program assuring that the latest materials are up to date, relevant, and engaging
  • Engage new and participating schools and community groups to participate in FFT sessions
  • Run FFT sessions including in-person and virtual experiences
  • Obtain testimonials for use in program promotion and marketing materials
  • Help develop additional FFT engagement opportunities/activities

Youth Rescuers Service Program

  • Work with the Marketing Coordinator to recruit students from high schools around Atlanta to participate in the Youth Rescuers program
  • Develop the content for the YR orientation and program requirements
  • Plan educational content and activities for Youth Rescuers meetings throughout the summer (in-person or virtual)
  • Track youth rescuer routes, participation, and impact information as participants volunteer throughout the summer
  • Gather pictures and other content for SHA communications and development 
  • Assist in envisioning ways to expand reach and engagement in the YR program

Additional Community Outreach Programming

  • Assist with coordinating special projects related to SHA’s food rescue and hunger relief mission
  • Develop ideas for new community programming and build out those programs (with Development Manager and Marketing & Outreach Coordinator) 

Other 

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Skills and Qualifications:

In addition to an understanding of, and commitment to, the mission of SHA, this position requires:

  • Desire to connect the community to knowledge and opportunities related to the SHA mission
  • Confident public speaking skills. 
  • Ability to manage and engage a group of 20-30 individuals.
  • Enjoyment of research work and developing educational content
  • Experience with and interest in project management
  • Highly motivated individual able to work both independently and with a team
  • Positive attitude, poised public presence, and ability to listen
  • Strong writing, editing, presentation, and communication skills
  • Ability to formulate creative content to engage others in our mission
  • Comfortable with technology and learning new systems. 
  • Knowledge of Google Workspace, PowerPoint, and other productivity tools
  • Great organizational, multitasking, and time-management skills
  • Creativity and enthusiasm for our food rescue mission
  • Strong desire for teamwork and collaboration
  • Willingness to occasionally work in a warehouse and/or outdoor environments

Compensation & Considerations:

  • Salary is $38,000+, depending upon experience. 
  • Benefits include PTO, a 403b plan, and an annual HRA stipend. 
  • Ability to accommodate working hours within SHA’s staff availability timeframe of Mon-Fri 8am-6pm. Evening and weekend hours may be required as needed. 
  • Willing to work in a hybrid model including remote and in-person environments.
  • Access to a personal vehicle is preferred as there is some work-related local travel required (gas reimbursement stipend provided)
