ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

This is a full-time, non-exempt opportunity in Mountain View, CA.  As paid employees, Fellows are eligible for full benefits. 

SVCF’s work environment is based on a holistic wellness approach and therefore, has embraced a hybrid remote/office work environment. All SVCF team members must be based and hold residency in California and must be able to regularly attend team and staff meetings, trainings and other gathering in Mountain View when required.

FELLOWSHIP SUMMARY

Silicon Valley Community Foundation is excited to announce the creation of a two-year SVCF Fellowship.  This new fellowship is meant to provide recent college graduates and early career professionals with an opportunity to learn and train in the field of Philanthropy. 

We are seeking fellows who can adapt to the wide and diverse needs of a large philanthropic organization.  Fellows will serve as full-time, non-exempt employees and will be placed in different departments in the Philanthropic Partnerships Division throughout the fellowship – Donor Engagement, Corporate Responsibility and Development.  They will have a portfolio of work that consists of departmental work and professional development.

The professional development component to the fellowship includes activities such as seminars, mentorship and guidance from the Foundation’s leaders and professional staff, as well as professional learning opportunities.  The majority of the fellow’s first year will be spent learning by doing departmental work, learning through a co-planned curriculum and fellowship activities. During the second year, fellows will assume greater responsibility and opportunities on on-going departmental work. 

As a cohort, the Fellows will gain a wide range of exposure and professional development in philanthropy, teamwork and project management.  The fellowship is cohort-based and supported by a Fellowship Coordinator allowing the Fellows to regularly engage in meaningful learning activities with peers in the program. Fellows are asked to assume leadership roles in the program to actively shape and continually improve their experience.  The goal is to move to a pooled, rotational model where all Fellows will spend time in each department to gain exposure to the various areas of philanthropic partnerships.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Donor Engagement

The Donor Engagement team works closely with donors to help them realize their philanthropic vision, removing the barriers and simplifying the process so that you can enjoy the passion of giving. Fellows supporting this team will learn about the both the practicalities and the strategies to support donors in their philanthropic goals. 

  • Provide front-line support and exceptional customer service to donors for a wide array of needs, including fund support/maintenance.
  • Work effectively across departments to support donors, investment managers, and other external partners by facilitating philanthropic requests.
  • Lead critical processes for SVCF’s community of supporting organizations, including maintaining board of directors’ rosters, facilitating conflict of interest surveys, attending and preparing for board meetings, handling various governance related tasks and assisting with grants.
  • Partner with and strategically support members of the Donor Engagement team in their work to provide best in class comprehensive advisory services for donors at all levels, from transactional to high-touch and/or high-demand funds.
  • Take the lead in cross-department collaborations and efforts with other departments to build on the work of Donor Engagement.
  • Provide critical departmental support, such as preparing spreadsheets/reports; research in preparation for donor briefings, presentations; preparing meeting minutes, written communications; scheduling check-ins; setting agendas; and facilitating communication within and across departments.

Corporate Responsibility

SVCF’s Corporate Responsibility team works closely with some of the world’s largest and most generous corporations to help advise plan and execute their philanthropy.  Fellows supporting this team will learn about corporate philanthropic strategy (local and global), employee engagement, disaster response and a broad spectrum of grants (from international academic grants to hyper-local nonprofit support).

  • Support the work of Corporate Responsibility team in their efforts to deliver responsive, effective and strategic grantmaking services to our corporate clients holding advised funds.  This includes, but is not limited to, preparing spreadsheets/reports, research, and presentations, as well as providing administrative support during grant cycles. 
  • Assist the Corporate Responsibility team on consulting projects for corporate clients, including conducting research on nonprofit organizations and preparing first drafts of client deliverables.
  • Provide departmental support with meeting agendas, notes and database maintenance.

Development

The Development team works with new and established donors to help identify and communicate the tools and vehicles to best help donors make their philanthropic impact, whether it is more immediate or through longer-term legacy projects.  While placed in the Development team, Fellows will learn about Donor Advised Funds, Individually Managed Funds and other tools that donors use to invest their philanthropic dollars.

  • Field inbound inquiries through Donate inbox and phone system.
  • Serve as the staff lead for the development department prospect assignment process including the creation of new records, updating existing records, constituent record updates, recommending and tracking approved assignments of donor prospects.
  • In collaboration with others across the division, manage and track the new fund opening process, including tracking referrals from professional advisors such as attorneys, tax planners and other advisors.
    Engage with prospective donors in person, by email and by phone and maintain accurate records on prospect communications in accordance with department policies and procedures
  • Lead assigned projects and support other members of the Development team.
  • Assist with improvements to SVCF website, marketing collateral and internal resources to support internal and external parties in understanding SVCF’s funds, services and policies.

All Departments

  • Maintain accurate records on a variety of platforms.
  • Manage the department’s inbox(es) and general number(s).
  • Coordinate and project manage action items for meetings with clients, donors and other constituents.
  • Schedule and participate in internal and external meetings; take notes upon request.
  • Draft meeting and presentation materials (slide decks, documents, external communications, graphics).
  • Research, synthesize and produce reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Build relationships and work with internal SVCF staff members to facilitate requests for information about various SVCF services and offerings in accordance with SVCF Customer Service Standards and Donate procedures.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

  • Strong software skills in Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook; fluency in Blackbaud, Financial Edge, Granted Edge, and Salesforce or ability to learn.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to work with diverse people and in diverse groups.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as analytical skills, with a proven ability to edit and proofread.
  • Proven ability to perform tasks independently with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with specific deadlines while delivering high quality work.
  • Ability to thrive in a rapidly shifting and evolving workplace.
  • 1 – 2 years of work experience preferred but not required. Recent graduates are also encouraged to apply.
