THE DIRECTOR OF FINANCE is primarily responsible for overseeing all aspects of financial management and accounting and reports directly to the President and CEO.  This position requires outstanding organizational and communication skills, adaptability, a positive attitude, self-directed time management, ability to track and complete multiple and ongoing projects, excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills, solution-focused mentality, and the ability to work well with all levels of internal management and staff, as well as with domestic violence professionals across the nation.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all accounting functions and finance team, including but not limited to financial reporting, cash flow management, budgeting, AP/AR, and Payroll
  • Manages monthly close process, including reconciliations, journal entries, and reports
  • Responsible for grant compliance and reporting for federal and nonfederal grant awards, including management of budget vs actuals, processing of reimbursement drawdowns, and oversight of sub-awards
  • Responsible for reviewing and processing all deposits and disbursements
  • Responsible for asset management
  • Manages all audit activities, including Annual A-133 Audit (due to the substantial funds received from federal grants) and preparation of the 990
  • Prepares annual organizational budget with input from President, CEO, and Program Directors
  • Prepares quarterly financial reports for the Board of Directors
  • Manages the employee 401k plan
  • Engages in employee benefits or other related issues as necessary
  • Reviews all vendor and consultant invoices/contracts
  • Prepares and submits annual 1099s
  • Supports program and development staff in the identification, writing, and submission of grant applications 

Programmatic Responsibilities

  • Prepares programmatic budgets with input from President, CEO, and Program Directors
  • Assist in event planning and oversight, including required Conference Request Forms and other grant documentation
  • Assist with setup, planning, and implementation of meetings, trainings, and events
  • Participate in travel and training as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Communication Responsibilities

  • Meet regularly with the President, CEO, Program Directors, and Finance Team
  • Meet regularly with program managers overseeing federal awards
  • Maintains effective relationships with key organizations, partners, staff, and board members
  • Answer questions, phone calls, emails

Skills, Abilities, and Values

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting is required, and a CPA preferred
  • Minimum 5-7 years of financial management and accounting required
  • Non-profit accounting and federal grants management experience required
  • QuickBooks experience and proficiency required
  • Knowledge of GAAP
  • Experience working in a remote organization or with employees nationwide preferred
  • Proven ability to develop and manage strong financial policies, procedures, and controls
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office Software
  • A heart for survivors of trauma and abuse
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated and a team player with a strong positive approach to relationships
  • Ability to exhibit a high level of confidentiality internally and externally
  • Ability to multitask on a regular basis
  • Ability to adapt to unexpected and changing situations and responsibilities

Salary and Benefits

  • Starting at $75,000 - $100,000 depending on experience
  • Benefits include health and dental insurance, 401K program, laptop, cell phone allowance, and other benefits listed in the Alliance personnel manual

The Alliance is currently transitioning to a partially remote organization model, where staff will work from home most of the time. Because we are an organization that places great value on personal connections and in-person collaboration, we will require occasional gatherings and travel throughout the year. We would prefer a candidate in San Diego, CA however as a partially remote organization, we are excited to invite applicants from across the country.

The standard 40-50 hour work week, with a typical 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. PST normal shift, applies. The Director of Finance is an exempt position. Additional hours may be required during the planning and execution of special events or particular deadlines. Some national travel for events and technical assistance delivery may also be required. There is no overtime pay but flex time and extraordinary Personal Time Off (PTO) is awarded at times.
