Associate Director

 

Summary/Objective

Supports the implementation of Council for a Strong America’s federal and state policy agenda by organizing grasstops law enforcement leaders to pursue opportunities to increase funding for evidence-based programs that help kids succeed (IE early childhood education and care, juvenile justice reform, children’s healthcare, after school programs, etc.) Develops and maintains relationships with our organization’s members (including police chiefs, sheriffs, and prosecutors) through recruitment, engagement, and member education. The Associate Director will help guide the Fight Crime: Invest in Kids National team through continued development of team strategic goals with the National Director. A strong candidate will be particularly passionate about finding the most effective and meaningful ways to engage law enforcement leaders to advocate for our shared policy objectives related to setting kids up for success.

Essential Functions

  1. Manage the recruitment and engagement of law enforcement leaders an assigned state portfolio (to include representing the organization at state and national law enforcement conferences, giving presentations, setting up individual meetings with potential members, and other tactics to develop relationships with members)

  2. Manage member activations to achieve federal and state policy goals (to include asking members to sign on to letters of support, working with members to publish Op-eds or LTEs, working with members to host press conferences, asking members to participate in policymaker meetings, asking members to participate in call alerts)

  3. Develop state-specific strategies for member recruitment and engagement in state portfolio

  4. Collaborate with other CSA teams like Federal Policy, Communications, Research to reach target policymakers and raise awareness about the issues in a strategic way

  5. Develop and maintain relationships with state level allied advocacy groups to align CSA advocacy issues and activations with the strategies and campaigns existing in the state

  6. In collaboration with National Director, develop and execute national member communications tools (such as quarterly newsletter)

  7. Apply data and metrics to promote deeper and wider member engagement. The candidate should have experience or interest in managing member relationships with a CRM (Council for a Strong America uses Salesforce primarily);

  8. Use data to create segmented lists in order to account for various levels of commitment to the organization and to build our pipeline of champion members;

 

Competencies

Essential:

  1. Strong commitment to our mission and strategic vision;

  2. At least four years of experience working in a related field (such as communications industry, policy-oriented setting, education sector, public interest sector);

  3. Extremely detail-oriented and well organized;

  4. Self-starter and ability to juggle multiple projects at once, and respond rapidly and flexibly to changing priorities, while meeting deadlines;

  5. Demonstrated ability to be an effective and persuasive communicator, both orally and in writing;

  6. Able to present sometimes complex information in a coherent, persuasive manner; in a variety of forums;

  7. Proficient with Google Drive/Word/Excel/PowerPoint ;

  8. Ability to perform research on legislative and regulatory issues and make recommendations on possible course of action; and

  9. Passion for issues affecting disadvantaged kids.

Desirable: 

  1. Substantive expertise in a number of issue areas related to childhood and adolescent  advocacy; and

  2. Experience working with law enforcement and/or grasstops leaders and/or with a non-profit.

Supervisory Responsibility

The associate director may have direct supervisory responsibilities following probationary period. 

Salary Range: $75K - $80K

Work Environment

This job operates in a clerical, office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

*Note: Our office staff is currently teleworking due to COVID-19 social distancing requirements and will continue to do so at least through the end of the year. Therefore, the ability to successfully work in a remote environment is essential. When the office reopens, this will be a full-time, in-office position.

Physical Demands

This is a largely sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must be available during the “core” work hours of 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and must work 40 hours each week to maintain full time status.

Travel

Travel will be required from time to time based on opportunities; about 1 - 2 trips every other month for 2 - 3 days.

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent number of years of experience
