Middle School Director General Job Description

Contract Position-June 6-July 15 + approx. 120 hours/yr. during the school year for Advance Staff Hiring, Program Planning, Board Meetings, etc.

Reports to Senior Program Director

Mission:
Odyssey is an educational non-profit organization partnering with the Atlanta Public Schools to serve approximately 400 students in grades 1-12 from economically disadvantaged communities. Odyssey’s academic enrichment program focuses on students with unmet potential, preparing them for high school graduation and supporting them on their path to college. Odyssey is a 6-week summer program (5-weeks for Odyssey High) held on the campus of Westminster Schools.  All expenses to attend Odyssey including transportation, school supplies, field trips, college tours, breakfast, snacks, and lunch – are provided through the generosity of our donors and supporters.  Odyssey strives to create an engaging educational environment that gives students the ability to excel in the upcoming school year and beyond, and to find value and excitement in classroom learning.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Create a positive learning environment with a focus on the growth of each child and the community.
  • Hire and supervise all school personnel, directly and/or indirectly.
  • Serve as the chief administrator of a school in executing Odyssey policies, programs, curriculum activities, and budgets in a manner that promotes the educational development of each student and the professional development of each staff member.
  • Ensure that the school program is compatible with the legal, financial and organizational structure of the Odyssey system. The director defines the responsibilities and accountability of staff members and develops plans for interpreting the school program to the community.
  • Provides activities which facilitate the professional growth of the Odyssey staff and enhance the quality of the instructional program.
  • Ensures that project-based learning and STEAM standards and best practices for each class are met.
  • Evaluate and report student progress in the instructional program by means that include the maintaining of up-to-date student data. The director supervises and appraises the performance of the school staff.
  • Maintains inter-school system communication and seeks assistance from Odyssey administrative staff to improve performance. The Director maintains good relationships with students, staff, and parents. The Director complies with established lines of authority.
  • Works with counselors to stay in communication with current students and alumni.
  • Represents high school program with the board of trustees and other stakeholders.
  • Manages, directs, and maintains records of the materials, supplies, and equipment which are necessary to carry out the daily school routine. The Director involves the staff in determining priorities for instructional purposes.
  • Serve as Chief Admissions Officer for the division.
  • Organizes, oversee, and provides support to the various services, supplies, material, and equipment resources provided to carry out the school program. The principal makes use of community resources
  • Assists to define and disseminate information about school disciplinary policies and procedures to parents, students, staff and community.
  • Coordinates all auxiliary services and field trips and uses community resources to supplement the school program.

Our 6-week summer program (5 weeks for Odyssey High) is held on the campus of The
Westminster Schools. The 375+ students selected to attend Odyssey are enrolled at schools in
the Atlanta Public School system and will be in grades 1 through 12 in the school year following
the summer. All expenses to attend Odyssey, which include transportation, school supplies,
lunch, field trips, overnight camps, etc. are provided through the generosity of our donors and
supporters. Odyssey strives to create an engaging educational environment that gives students
the ability to excel in the upcoming school year and beyond; and to find value and excitement
in classroom learning.
