Pacific Environment is campaigning to end fossil fuel use, including to get ships off fossil fuels. Our current strategies include creating strong regulatory frameworks to achieve zero-emission shipping on a timeline commensurate with the climate emergency, pressuring corporate customers to demand zero-emission ships, and influencing ports on the Pacific West Coast and beyond to end fossil fuel build out and ready themselves for zero-emission shipping instead.
The Climate Campaign Operations Director will provide critical operational leadership to a dynamic, growing team of climate advocates. You will manage, hire, and onboard staff, handle the range of operational needs of the climate team (which include technology, skills training, remote and workplace needs, employment matters, and state legal issues), and work closely with Pacific Environment’s finance leadership on the funding and budgets of the Climate Program.
Your goal will be that your climate colleagues are unaware of the many operations/finance hurdles you are handling to smooth their path to campaign success.
You will be a part of the Climate Program’s leadership team and will report to the Climate Campaign Director. You will also collaborate closely, and at times receive direction from, Pacific Environment’s Finance & Operations Director.
Location and Travel
The position is based in our San Francisco headquarters. Our organization is actively reevaluating our in-office requirements and the possibilities of remote work.
The position will involve some domestic, and possibly international, travel, once travel is again safe in terms of Covid-19.
- Implement daily operations of the climate team, including financial, IT, human resources, contracts and vendors, building leases and maintenance
- Collaborate with and advise the Climate Campaign Director on program and campaign health, growth, and impact; implement program-specific policies, business plans, and strategies
- Lead in climate strategic planning, as assigned by the Climate Campaign Director
- Lead in program budget management and advising the Climate Campaign Director on budget issues
- Lead in recruiting and hiring new climate staff and consultants, onboarding new staff, attending to the skills training-and-development needs of colleagues, and other HR- and employment-related needs
- Manage staff, as assigned by the Climate Campaign Director, and supervise and implement employee program performance reviews
- 6+ years of relevant experience and increasing responsibility in organizational leadership; experience in nonprofit advocacy-campaign organizations a plus
- Demonstrated resourcefulness in improving organizational and finance processes, creating efficient systems, and institutionalizing knowledge
- Experience in winning campaigns a strong plus
- Superior abilities in serving and collaborating with a staff of 2-3 dozen team members and outside consultants and vendors; ability to engage on sensitive issues with tact, diplomacy, discretion, and judgment
- Technological savvy and ability to support staff in a number of remote locations and with varying technological skills
- Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the requisite attention to detail and quality of work product
- Experience with Quickbooks or other accounting software a plus
- Nonprofit work is demanding and sometimes frustrating: a sense of humor is a requirement for success
Compensation and Benefits
Pacific Environment provides compensation commensurate with experience and equitable with others on our team, plus a full benefits package. The salary range for this position is $64,000-$80,000, which is carefully considered to account for equity. The employee will enjoy a flexible working environment with a dedicated, diverse group of colleagues.
