Job Description

Denver Families for Public Schools seeks a passionate advocate for school choice with an organizing and political background. A strategic, problem-solving, and proven leader with at least six years of campaign and organizing experience who is ready to serve as the Executive Director.  They will be a passionate advocate for civic and electoral engagement within Denver’s public charter school community.

The Executive Director will provide leadership and vision for the organization; build and lead a strong team of organizers and communicators; develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders; and drive greater electoral advocacy and mobilization for our community of students, alumni, and families. 

The Executive Director will be an important member of the community, representing Denver Families for Public Schools externally and working closely with community partners, including school leaders, other nonprofit organizations, and elected officials. The Executive Director will be heavily involved in the future determination of the organization’s path forward.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish, build trust with, and maintain relationships with other nonprofit organizations, school leaders, candidates for office, elected officials, corporations, schools, media, and donors.  
  • Develop and implement a robust, scalable stakeholder engagement strategy geared towards establishing an ongoing dialogue, creating clear feedback loops, and facilitating collaboration with community partners.
  • Develop and execute a voter registration and mobilization strategy to ensure that charter school families and stakeholders are able to fully realize their electoral influence. 
  • Develop and implement strategies for engaging, supporting, and mobilizing our community of charter school families, and for ensuring that families are equipped to win on the issues that matter for their children, like access to equitable resources and fair policies. 
  • Build a strong grassroots organization of supporters and cultivate a culture of deep, lasting participation in the work to advocate for improved outcomes for Denver public school students. 
  • Develop and execute a fundraising plan that will enable the organization to fully realize its strategic vision with the financial resources on-hand. 
  • Grow, manage, and support an excellent and diverse team of organizers and communicators; create systems and processes to encourage collaboration and efficiency.

Qualifications:

  • Belief in the power of grassroots organizing, passion for educational justice, and urgency around improving educational outcomes. 
  • A strong personal narrative and a clear vision for supporting and amplifying the voices of the Denver charter school community. 
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating, communicating with, and managing a diverse ecosystem of stakeholders through an emotionally intelligent, collaborative, respectful, and inclusive leadership style.
  • At least 6 years of experience with electoral campaign organizing, including proven success executing different types of organizing campaigns (not just electoral organizing).
  • At least 6 years of experience in community development, advocacy and politics, including understanding how to move an issue forward outside of organizing and how city and state politics connect. 
  • Demonstrated experience setting, fundraising for, and maintaining a budget.
  • Strong organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development, and task facilitation.
  • Excellence in leadership and management: proven ability to recruit and retain talent, manage diverse teams and organizations, and achieve results. 
  • Comfort and experience using data to drive decision making, including experience with voter files and using large databases (like Salesforce) to shape strategy, improve efficiency, and achieve success 
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse communities and stakeholders with varying perspectives.
  • Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including families, educators, community leaders, elected officials, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other advocates. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Nice to have:

  • Experience working with charter schools and/or organizations in the charter advocacy space. 
  • Experience engaging and maintaining relationships with grant-making organizations and/or individual donors. 
  • Preexisting relationships with Denver decision-makers and experience with Colorado and Denver politics.
  • Proficiency in writing and speaking Spanish.
