Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers (RCI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the health, strength, and resilience of all caregivers at every stage of their journey. Established in 1987 at Georgia Southwestern State University, RCI coaching and support to caregivers in Georgia has grown to embrace opportunities nationwide to reach more caregivers in more places. In 2020, RCI expanded nationally and became an independent nonprofit to fulfill its promise to champion the family caregiver by building cross-sector partnerships, promoting evidence-based programs, and advocating for public policy.

By providing free, personalized one-on-one coaching and support to caregivers anchored in the latest research, RCI’s programs and policy work impact caregivers’ health and future. Using the evidence-based programs and curriculum, RCI has a proven track record of improving physical and mental health among family and friend caregivers.

RCI is seeking a dynamic and seasoned professional to serve as its first Director of Communications to lead the organization’s communication strategy in promoting support for unpaid caregivers through direct support, education and advocacy. POSITION PURPOSE

The Director of Communications will be responsible for the overall communications strategy for a growing organization. He/She will be the organization’s chief communications expert to continue to build trust in RCI and its relevance in the community, communicating impact and success while cultivating support and influence.  The Director of Communications will be expected to work with staff, partners and key stakeholders to build upon the successful foundation of programs, elevate awareness, honor a legacy and forge new relationships to advocate for caregivers. The ideal candidate will be a highly respected marketing and communications professional who is an expert in their craft, creative and strategic. As a collaborative thought leader, this person will need to be adaptable and goal-oriented with strong media connections and a proven track record of leading successful communication and marketing campaigns.

Critical to the success of the selected candidate and the organization, the Director of Communications must have a background working with advocacy organizations and a passion for advancing the health and well-being of caregivers. The Director of Communications will use the combination of his or her credibility and RCI’s reputation to accomplish outcomes that lead to  change.

  • Location: Main office is located in Americus, GA however this position will be located in or near metro-Atlanta.
  • 2021 Budget: $3.1M annual operating budget with anticipated growth
  • Employees: 17 total with additional contractors as needed. This position may have the opportunity to build out a communications team over a period of several years as organization grows.

CREDENTIALS

Education

Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in the fields of public relations or communications is strongly preferred.  Publications, memberships to professional networks and solid existing relationships in Metro-Atlanta will be a strong advantage.  

Experience

The successful candidate will have a minimum of ten years of related experience with demonstrated leadership in their field. Experience leading and directing results-oriented campaigns for both programs and policy advocacy will be an advantage. The successful candidate must possess a passion for and commitment to supporting and advocating for caregivers to improve health and well-being and the ability to articulate the case for the mission and programs.

Strategic Leadership

The successful candidate will demonstrate a history of

  • Working with staff, partners, and key stakeholders to develop an annual integrated communications plan that elevates the profile and brand of the organization among current and prospective target audiences.
  • Providing strategic counsel on communications issues to senior leadership, the Board of Directors, and subject matter experts. Leveraging programs, partners, and board members to advance and achieve program and policy goals.
  • Monitoring progress against the strategic communications plan, making recommendations to capitalize on successes, understanding risk, employing good judgement and mitigating unforeseen issues.
  • Analyzing trends and data to understand emerging issues related to mission initiatives to inform strategy and decision-making of communication activities.
  • Identifying and implementing the communication and marketing strategies with the greatest impact on outcomes aligned to overall organizational goals.
  • Increasing awareness of an issue and organization’s visibility in leading that work nationally.

Relationship Building

Candidates will have a proven track record of

  • Working with and in cross-functional teams and collaborative partnerships demonstrating social and emotional intelligence through solid interpersonal skills.
  • Speaking and writing with evident passion about a topic of importance, combining statistics with stories in a mix appropriate to a variety of audiences.
  • Developing a media outreach strategy and cultivating relationships with media outlets, including cultivating and stewarding active relationships with journalists, reporters, editors, producers, and influencers.
  • Developing, documenting and implementing a marketing and public relations strategy in order to build trust and credibility and cultivate influence, support and donors.  
  • Positively leveraging connections and voices of funders and partners in a way that advances the mission and goals.
  • Engaging high-profile and celebrity stakeholders appropriately while managing expectations of engagement.
  • Recognizing and enhancing the legacy of the founder and capitalizing on the reputation built through that work.

Technical Execution

Candidates will have proven success with

  • Building communication processes and systems to ensure adequate input, development of project plans and materials, and delivery with accuracy and consistent messaging.
  • Balancing marketing needs of direct service programs with advocacy communications to secure financial and non-financial support and build awareness of the issue and organization.
  • Pitch timely stories and op-eds to media outlets, vet media opportunities, and serve as lead on media interactions. Produce press materials and media resources.
  • Lead development of brand collateral (i.e., brochures, one-pagers, infographics, newsletters, press releases, publications etc.) for program and policy teams to leverage engagement form diverse audiences. Ensure brand and narrative consistency both within and outside the organization.
  • Drafting and copy editing website, presentations, speeches, blog posts, social media content, reports, etc. and articulating general talking points for the organization on a variety of topics in a consistent voice.
  • Collect testimonials and stories from diverse set of stakeholders to authentically promote their lived experiences and garner support for the mission.
  • Crafting communications around policy initiatives and advocacy goals framing and distributing legal and policy resources in a digestible manner relatable to diverse public audiences to advance thought leadership.
  • Design a comprehensive digital strategy to leverage the organization’s online presence through website enhancement and social media campaigns.
