Overview

The Manager, Animal Logistics plays a key role in maximizing our lifesaving capacity in our community and our partners’ communities in California. This role requires drive and passion in guiding the team, partnering with source shelters, and bringing in animals to support adoption driven demand. The Manager, Animal Logistics will also create and drive a foster strategy to expand capacity for the neediest animals in our community to ensure animals have the shortest length of stay. This role is vital in managing a team that recruits and manages partner shelter relationships, coordinates and executes animal transports, manages the animal’s pathway through our shelter (including foster homes) and grows/maintains awesome relationships with our fosters.

This is a highly collaborative role partnering with others and the ideal candidate is outcome oriented, passionate about operational excellence and possesses strong leadership skills. Ability to be innovative, comfortable with driving change and able to operate both at a strategic and operational level is essential.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Build and manage innovative programs and services that increases animal capacity and develop best practices, enabling HSSV to scale our rescue work.
  • Manage a high performing team (comprised of staff and supervisors supporting foster and rescue work) and spearhead team building, employee relations, communications, training, performance management, and goal setting. Forecast hiring plans and drive hiring decisions for the team.
  • Develop departmental goals and budget.
  • Promote sustainable departmental change management through analytical and iterative problem-solving and transparency in communications across the organization and lead by example.
  • Utilize the tools of education, motivation, coordination, evaluation and analysis to achieve excellent customer service to both internal and external customers and partners.
  • Work with employees and other managers to create processes and procedures to continue scaling the functionality of the team.
  • Partner collaboratively and effectively in a cross-functional environment with others to accomplish organizational goals and objectives.  Communicate regularly with key stakeholders about shelter capacity and potential daily intake of new animals.
  • Work with the Volunteer team to manage over 1,000 current foster volunteers, plan and execute ongoing foster recruitment and provide ongoing educational opportunities to foster families.  Cultivate positive and productive relationships with staff and foster families to support positive animal outcomes.  Oversee transfer of animal records as part of the transport process.
  • Ensure all animals are handled safely and humanely, and staff is properly trained in species-specific handling and restraint, utilizing fear-free techniques.
  • Participate in rounds discussions that may result in euthanasia decisions.
  • Other job duties may be assigned as needed.

Requirements

  • Experience with successful program, logistics and people management in a fast-paced environment. Familiarity with live animal transport a plus.
  • Proven ability to deliver organizational outcomes.
  • Experience with transport networks, supply chain or other complex and dynamic systems.
  • Demonstrated leadership with strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Previous experience working in a highly collaborative environment with a cross-functional management team.
  • Forward looking with strong initiative to strive for increased results; multi-tasking abilities are key.
  • Embraces change and is willing to learn, implement and teach new protocols as well as quickly adjust focus and shift priorities shelter and community needs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to a diverse range of audiences and settings.
  • Strong computer knowledge with proven proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Excels in working with various databases, accurately collecting and analyzing data, and creating reports.

Work Days and Hours
This is a 40-hour per week salaried position which includes one weekend day. Hours are flexible based on organizational need and evenings may occasionally be required. HSSV is a 24/7/365 organization. This position requires rotating after-hours emergency on-call phone shifts and rotating coverage of holidays.
