Make the Road New York (MRNY) builds the power of immigrant and working-class communities to achieve dignity and justice through organizing, policy innovation, transformative education, and survival services. Make the Road New York operates community centers in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Jackson Heights, Queens; Port Richmond, Staten Island; Brentwood, Long Island and White Plains, Westchester County. With a membership of 23,000, MRNY tackles the critical issues facing our communities, including workplace justice, tenants’ rights, immigrant rights and civil rights, TGNCIQ justice, public education, health care access, and immigration reform. The Fund Excluded Workers Coalition is a dynamic statewide coalition of 200+ organizations stretching from Long Island to Syracuse. After a year of intense organizing, including a 23 day hunger strike, the coalition won a first-in-the-nation $2.1 billion fund for workers excluded from unemployment insurance and federal COVID relief programs. Applications for the Excluded Worker Fund (EWF) are expected to open in August 2021 and will deliver up to $15,600 in benefits to eligible applicants. Current Opening:

We are currently hiring 10 Excluded Worker Fund Navigators to join a new project which aims to assist community members to apply for economic relief under the New York State Excluded Worker Fund. Under the supervision of a Senior Navigator, the navigators will directly assist low-income immigrant New Yorkers in applying for up to $15,600 from New York’s Excluded Worker Fund. This position will be remote, with in-person responsibilities at Make the Road offices in NYC and application assistance clinics across the state. Currently, our offices are closed and we are operating remotely until further notice.  This position is part-time, 30 hours / week for six months. This position starts as soon as August and ends February.

 Job Responsibilities / Tasks will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conduct preliminary intake with clients and gather information to assess eligibility for the EWF program;  Collect and review/analyze documents electronically or by other means;  Assist clients to fill out online applications and respond to requests for additional information, including assisting to obtain information and documents when necessary, and following up with clients via phone/text, email and regular mail;  Conduct in person trainings or application assistance events as needed.  Formal and informal advocacy with government agencies on behalf of clients relating to the EWF program;  Collaborate with the coalition organizations to achieve successful outcomes for clients, and make referrals to other services as needed;  Data entry in internal and external data management systems, including Salesforce; create and maintain electronic and physical files for clients where needed; and cooperate with grant reporting requirements.  Participate in team meetings, application assistance clinics and other events as necessary  Adhere to all data security and privacy protocols around application completion;

Requirements:

  • Eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Spanish language fluency
  • Experience and fluency using technology, including but not limited to computers, tablets, scanners, cell phones and related applications such as WhatsApp, Google Voice, Zoom, etc.
  • Interpersonal and organizational skills of the highest caliber
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends
  • Ability to travel in New York State, as needed

Job Competencies:

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-energy environment

Preferences:

  • Experience with and an understanding of public benefits programs
  • Interest in work supporting community organizing, campaigns, and policy and advocacy initiatives
  • Experience with low-income immigrant workers – such as street vendors, day laborers, domestic workers, restaurants workers, and farm workers
  • Full-time access to computer and cell phone

Salary

The salary for navigators is $18 per hour and navigators should expect to work approximately 25  hours per week.
