Job Description: Communications and Development Manager

Reports to: Executive Director

Status: Exempt, Full-time (40 hours per week), Regular, At-Will

Position Summary

The Communications and Development Manager ensures that all communications, development, and programming goals are met. The CDM reports directly to the Executive Director and, as part of a small, close-knit staff, works with others as necessary on marketing, fundraising, and programming needs. This multi-faceted role must balance a number of duties, including supporting promotion efforts for three annual exhibitions and related community programs; overseeing the website, email communications, and social media; managing individual and institutional giving efforts; implementing the Community Program Partnership proposal process; and assisting with the annual juried exhibition selection process.

This position requires a professional individual with the ability to work efficiently on multiple projects, prioritize, follow through, and communicate effectively. The CDM must be a self-starter who demonstrates a flexible and adaptable work style, and responds quickly and efficiently to things as they happen. The CDM must have related nonprofit communications and fundraising experience, excellent writing and editing skills, proficiency in a range of web, design, and database applications, and basic event production skills.

Essential Functions


  • Develops, implements and manages communications for the Brower Center’s exhibitions and community programs including: newsletters, website, and social media communications; print materials; community outreach; advertising; press releases
  • Maintains and oversees Brower Center website in WordPress, including the setup of virtual galleries
  • Develops and manages all print, online, and email communications and collateral
  • Plans and executes all email outreach and organizational communications using MailChimp, including a monthly newsletter and emails related to programming
  • Generates, posts, and manages social media accounts: Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter
  • Oversees Google Analytics and Google AdWords accounts
  • Manages vendors including photographers, videographers, graphic designers, printers, and web developer
  • Leads the storyboarding and development of original creative such as gallery tours and artist spotlight videos, working with contractors as needed
  • Manages print and online graphic design efforts using Adobe Creative Suite, working with contractors as needed


  • Manages fundraising campaigns and events, including: drafting correspondence, project managing grant applications and reports, creating sponsorship packages, and designing solicitations
  • Researches and tracks individual and institutional revenue sources to expand funding opportunities
  • Oversees, with input from Executive Director, all grant proposals and reports including writing, editing, budgeting and compiling related documentation
  • Drafts and sends thank you letters for donations
  • Creates and manages online fundraising campaigns and integrates them into social media
  • Oversees Salesforce to track donations and grants


  • Assists Executive Director in setting and achieving goals for Arts & Education program
  • Oversees the Community Program proposal process including outreach, partner selection, communication, and drafting memorandums of understanding that outline the roles and responsibilities for Brower Center-hosted events
  • Manages online ticketing for all Brower Center produced events through Eventbrite software
  • Develops media toolkits to share with event partners to promote via email, social media, and web
  • Works closely with event production staff to ensure smooth coordination of all Brower Center produced events
  • Assists with exhibition production including editing calls to artist, online submission platform and artist communication for annual juried exhibition, execution of wall labels for youth and juried exhibition, and other materials as needed

Other Duties

  • Actively participates in staff meetings
  • Assists other staff with projects when possible
  • Serves as a Brower Center representative in public settings as necessary
  • Assists with evacuation procedures during building emergencies
  • Other duties, as assigned


  • Minimum three years of progressively responsible fundraising, communications, programming and related experience
  • Four-year college degree or equivalent required
  • Experience working for a nonprofit
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write and speak persuasively
  • Knowledge of the environmental movement as it relates to intersectional theory strongly desired
  • Strong knowledge of Salesforce, WordPress, Mailchimp, and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Advanced user of Mac OSX, Microsoft Office, Google apps and the web
  • Familiarity with social media etiquette and advancing meaningful, aesthetically consistent campaigns
  • Ability to effectively meet deadlines and independently organize workflow
  • Able to lift and move up to 30 lbs
