Do you consider yourself a democracy-loving, inclusion champion? Are you someone who wants to help parents and caregivers get involved with public affairs so government policies reflect what families need? Then Politisit is the organization for you! We are looking for a part-time, contracted Executive Director to help us build our non-profit centered around including more parents and caregivers in policy discussions. Join us to create tangible change in our local community so that hard working voices get the opportunity to speak up about how policies and legislative bills directly affect their lives.
Politisit is an Oregon-based non-profit that increases civic participation by removing a barrier to families - the cost of childcare. It's a simple model: the client sets up child care to participate in a civic meeting or activity and we reimburse the costs within 48 hours via Paypal or 10 days by check. We work with individual families that arrange childcare in their homes while attending a meeting; partner with nonprofits that host childcare at their meetings; and collaborate with local government agencies and elected officials trying to increase attendance by ensuring childcare is available at public meetings.
This government meeting programming is currently only in Oregon; however, we regularly get requests from across the country to expand to other states. The “Childcare for Voters” program is in other states and will expand once the new executive director is established.
We are seeking a part-time, contracted executive director (ED) to build and expand the program in Oregon. The ED oversees all operational and administrative functions. They will also collaborate with the Board of Directors (Board) to develop strategies for implementing the organization’s mission and vision through values-aligned partnerships and projects, and through building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
The YWCA of Greater Portland is Politisit’s fiscal sponsor. This means the ED will be in contract with the YWCA but reporting to the Politisit Board. This allows the Politisit team to focus on our programming while the YWCA provides technical expertise in financial management and operations. This relationship will give the ED access to any offered YWCA trainings. The YWCA of Greater Portland’s mission is to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. At the YWCA, we seek meaningful engagement and value diverse perspectives. We recognize that to support vulnerable populations we must build long-lasting, respectful relationships. We do our best to facilitate a brave environment and welcome creative solutions because we understand that situations are always evolving, and our clients and staff are the experts of their experience. We favor qualified BIPOC, Bicultural, Bilingual and LGBTQ+ candidates. Diversifying our community to create the changes we need to see is vital. Working with the YWCA is an opportunity to positively impact the lives of those you work with and impact change in our society. Come be a part of our community, for your community!
The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who is comfortable running an organization as the sole employee until further hires are recommended. This is a contract position. While the hire will work remotely, periodic attendance at in-person community and partner meetings will be required; therefore, residence in the Portland-metro area is preferred. Competence and experience in the listed areas of key responsibilities will make an applicant competitive for the position.
The ED is expected to develop and administer the organizational strategy and accompanying budget.
The ED will identify opportunities to include additional roles as the organization scales.
This work will be in collaboration with the Board through facilitation of Board meetings, planning for Board succession, and identifying gaps to ensure the Board is an accurate representation of both the organization and the communities it serves.
The YWCA of Greater Portland is the fiscal sponsor, and the ED will ensure Politisit is in compliance with the terms of our contract and communicate with staff at the YWCA as needed about the contract, finances, and other issues as necessary.
Program Strategy and Oversight:
The ED will continuously advance programs through cultivation of current and identification of new partnerships.
They will both work autonomously and collaborate with the leadership team to evolve and streamline communications, organizational processes, structures and culture to accommodate the organization’s rapid growth objectives.
The ED will report on the operating condition of the organization at Board meetings.
They will administer the program. This will include observing, supporting, and providing service to clients and partners. The goal is to increase our service’s use throughout the State of Oregon by individual clients, nonprofit partners, and local government entities. It is expected that a portion of time will be spent in the field.
The ED will set and meet fundraising targets to support the growth of Politisit.
They will refine strategies for donor support, relationship management, and stewardship at all giving levels, including high volume individual support and brand/corporate partnerships.
They will source new potential donors and support the Board in fundraising efforts.
The ED will implement a successful system to secure institutional funds through grant writing. They will take lead on these applications through both writing and relationship building efforts.
Community Relations and Communication:
The ED will create and implement a plan to engage our communities and partners through personal contact, social media accounts, and traditional media outreach.
They will maintain social media accounts for Politisit. This includes creating weekly content, responding to engagement, and ensuring presence is assisting in public relations goals. At this time, Politisit has accounts on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter.
They will act as Politisit’s main point of contact and ensure community relations increase recognition and use of the Politisit program.
The ED will also strategize donor communications and serve as the point of contact for key donors seeking strategic and impact-based updates.
Experience managing programs and projects is required. An undergraduate degree with strong writing and communications skills is desired. Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply for jobs unless they believe they are able to perform every task in the job description. We are most interested in finding the best candidate for the position, and that candidate may be one who comes from a less traditional background. Politisit will consider any equivalent combination of knowledge, skills, education and experience to meet minimum qualifications. If you are interested in applying, we encourage you to think broadly about your background and skill set for the role.
Pay: $27-32/hour as a contract 1099 employee. As the role and organization expands, there is room for growth in both compensation and benefits.
Part-time, up to 20 hours per week with opportunity to expand the role to a full-time position as the organization grows. Hours are flexible, but will require attendance at Board meetings and periodic attendance at some night and weekend meetings for events and community outreach.
Periodic travel will be necessary for community outreach and partnership building in Oregon. Employee must provide their own transportation.
Please fill out this Google form: https://bit.ly/PolitisitED. You will need to provide a resume (preferably as your LinkedIn account), a cover letter, and a short writing sample (1000 words or less).
The hiring process will include three rounds of interviews, which will occur through both video conferencing and in-person meeting, as allowed by CDC guidelines.
This posting will remain open until the position is filled. Application review will start July 25, 2021. A successful candidate will participate in three rounds of interviews, which will commence July 28th and conclude August 12th.
